How can we change the language of medicine to set up patients for success? This was one of the questions of Dr Lala when she met a young father with acute heart failure. After talking with him, she replaced the word failure with function. This seemingly small change created a real difference for the patient. How can we create real understanding through words? How can scientific publishing aid diversity, equity and inclusion?This week’s episode starts a series in collaboration with the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA). Dr. Anuradha Lala is an Assistant professor, Medicine, Cardiology, Mount Sinai Health System, New York. She is also the Director of Heart Failure Research NHLBI Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.She completed her MD, from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, followed by an Internship in Internal Medicine, from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She did her fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease, at New York University School of Medicine, and in Heart Failure, at Harvard Medical School.She selected as the American Heart Association Young Professionals Society Honoree, in 2016 for her service and commitment to education and promoting cardiovascular health awareness. She has published over 50 research papers and co-authored many others.
