Janet Werner is a painter born in Winnipeg, Manitoba who lives and works in Montreal, Quebec. She received her MFA from Yale University in 1987. She’s had many solo shows including ones at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Parisian Laundry (Montreal), Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles, CA), Galerie Julia Garnatz (Cologne), Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts (Montreal), Whatiftheworld Gallery (Cape Town) and Plug Institute of Contemporary Art (Winnipeg). Group exhibitions include shows at  MASS MoCA (North Adams), Musée d’art contemporain (Montreal), Kenderdine Art Gallery (Saskatoon). A solo survey exhibition entitled “Another Perfect Day” organized by the Kenderdine Art Gallery, University of Saskatchewan, toured to five locations in Canada from 2013-2015. Janet’s work is in the collections of the Musée du Québec, Musée d’art contemporain, Montreal, The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Toronto, Owens Art Gallery, Sackville, the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Winnipeg Art Gallery and numerous private and corporate collections. She has current work at 12.26 gallery in Dallas and a solo show at Bradley Ertaskiran Gallery in Montreal.

Art Toronto, Canada’s international contemporary and modern art fair, is being held this weekend, and to highlight this important event we sat down with a few women artists for a special showcase.The art industry continues to be marked by inequality: as of the first half of 2018, there were only 5 women on Artnet’s list of the 100 best-selling artists at auction. The number of women on this list has fluctuated between just 2 and 6 since 2013. Overall, 96.1% of artworks sold at auction are by male artists.The top three museums in the world — the British Museum, the Louvre, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art —have never had female directors.Women are still behind men in directors positions in at museums with budgets over $15M, holding 30% of art museum director positions and earning 75¢ for every dollar earned by male directors.Our first guest part of our Art Toronto showcase is Janet Werner, a Winnipeg-born, Montreal-based painter. Janet’s work is presented at Art Toronto and she has a solo show opening at the start of November at the Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal.Janet studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and went on to attend Yale University where she received her Masters of Fine Arts. She taught painting and drawing at the University of Saskatchewan and started teaching at Concordia University when she moved to Montreal in 1999.Janet is known for her impressive, large scale fictional portraits of women. Janet has been called The Vision Lady by many of her pharmaceutical clients in the 1990’s because she led multi-year transformational projects facilitating thousands of employees from the Board Room to frontline operators through creating their own personal vision. She was a forerunner in the early days by personalizing vision when not many consultants were doing that. Her passion and vision as a 33 year-old entrepreneur launched her into Fortune 500 companies in continuous projects without any investment in marketing. That is the power of passionate vision.Today, Janet’s passionate vision remains steadfast while continuously expanding over three decades. Her vision is to get words out around the globe that move people to right action without a lot of effort. She is evolving her 30 year practice into producing words in simple books and on consumer products with the vision of mass distribution around the globe.  She takes a word like RESPECT or HONESTY or ACCOUNTABILITY and weaves a language habit into the daily practice of individuals, teams and organizational cultures in a way that moves people to action.  Janet may be seen handing a sticker to an employee that says:  I have a lot of respect for you. Her work has found a place in public and private collections and she has shown in solo and group exhibitions in a wide range of important galleries and institutions.As Janet shares in this conversation, her work revolves around the idea of human figures. Even though her work is very close to what is usually described as a portrait, the characters in her paintings are usually invented and stem out of abstraction. In this conversation she shares where those portraits are most likely coming from and what does she think of them.
