Not long ago, the CIOs of many universities in Ontario, Canada realized that, even if they had security personnel within their team, they couldn't provide security thought leadership. To address this need, they jointly funded a pilot program within ORION to assess the institutions' current state. The program quickly turned to make sure that they came up with a federated cybersecurity framework, a model for shared security services that could be both scalable and sustainable at the same time.This program's impact is profound — one of the prominent examples coming in the form of establishing a culture of security across all of the member universities, expanding up to the government level and reaching down into the curriculum and to the students.Another consequence of this synergy is community-oriented actions, such as embracing digital equity and developing a platform that ensures all stakeholders can access and reap the maximum benefit. There are numerous initiatives right now which have been done through collaboration by the institutions.One key concept is called EduRoam, which provides simple, easy, secure connectivity to students that are part of the participating university from thousands of hotspots across more than 100 countries.It may not seem like much, but in a world where a culture of global initiatives and collaboration seems to miss the fervor of the first internet days, this goes to show that academia can still be the driving force for a culture of innovation and collaboration.Cheers to many similar initiatives all over the World!"When I stepped into this whole ecosystem, I was clueless about how this ecosystem and higher education worked.
