Derek Lueking was last seen leaving the Microtel Inn and Suites in Cherokee, North Carolina at 4:00 a.m. on March 17, 2012. His white Ford Escape was found at 8:30 a.m. at  Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near the Tennessee/North Caroline state line. Inside the vehicle was a note saying simply: "Don't follow me."
