This is episode 7, I've got Rob Tye, Founder and CEO of Necessity Media and SentWise. He's based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Rob Tye had a stready job in private banking in Milwaukee. When Facebook started in the digital ads space 2009, Rob Tye picked up and left his job, knowing that social media marketing was the future. Thus, he founded Necessity Media based in Miwaukee. In 2019, he founded SentWise, a product startup for secure file transfer.Necessity Media is a marketing agency with seven employees. A few months ago, Rob had actually launched a new company, Billions More, with 19 brands on the platform. But when COVID-19 hit, the floor fell out from under them and Rob had to do a hard pivot. He discovered that brands had a deer in the headlights look of how they were going to manage and get their message out in the crisis situation. Before this situation hit, the brands were developing the creative content themselves and Necessity Media owned the promotion. But, Rob shares the moment where he realized something needed to change:“Retrospectively, when this crisis hit, I thought to myself — a lot of people are going to start giving up. A lot of people don’t know how to pivot.”Their clients are coming to them in crisis, and Rob shares the hard pivot are able to help them navigate the constraints and turn it into creative opportunity.Necessity Media’s pivot to owning the creative part of the content is giving his clients piece of mind. It allow them to trust Rob and his company to see them through these troubled waters and into the future.Rob gave the example of one of the country’s largest banks missing a moment with banking applications. Instead of the bank saying, “We’re at capacity and cannot take anymore applications.” (Essentially, making it about them.) They should have come up with a creative way to still help businesses and did a mega marketing push. For me, Rob’s insight drove home this point that applies to any market, industry, or economic situation. This question- “What’s on the mind and heart of the people you are trying to reach?” Too often, we see our marketing and messaging through the lens of our own company. What we do, the problem we solve. Depending on the industry or market like in technical B2B play, this tendency can be magnified. Instead, how often do we ask, “What do our customers need us to be right now?
