Preaching for the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, Kayla August offers a reflection on Mary's unique role as a pillar of our community and example to all:    "She was sent to make known that the one she loved…. LIVED. She wasn’t just a woman who hoped and prayed, who waited and wept, she was a woman who LOVED. And a God who is LOVE knows that a woman who loves and believes … is the way to change the world. So, let Magdalene be a reminder of what we can endure, what we can bring, and what awaits those powered by love."   Kayla August is a doctoral student at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College, where she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Theology and Education with a focus on preaching. As a lay woman in the Church, Kayla makes a point to preach whenever and wherever she can. Put it on the mind of a women who loves you. with Kayla August

“Catholic Christans came into my community and they helped us with education, they helped us with healthcare, they helped us to find our self-respect and to realize our capabilities when the world had told us for so long that we were nothing and would amount to nothing. And I wanted to be part of that effort. That’s radical Christianity, that’s radical Catholicism. How do we find the needs of God’s people? How do we as a Catholic Christian community of believers say that we believe that God is active in our lives, and we want to share the Good News with you?”These are the words of Servant of God, Sr. Thea Bowman. She encountered the Gospel not just in the words but also in the actions of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration who came from Wisconsin down to Thea’s hometown of Canton, Mississippi and created new opportunities for education, for healthcare, for respect and dignity for Thea and other young black people like her in the segregated south of the early 20th Century. She was so attracted to the Gospel she found in these sisters that she joined them. The Word of God took root in the heart and mind, the imagination and the cultural history of Thea Bowman. Now, more than 30 years after her death, her cause for canonization is underway, and she shows a new generation of Catholics and Americans what it means to be fully alive in the Gospel.As part of the annual Saturdays with the Saints lecture series through the McGrath Institute for Church Life at Notre Dame, Kayla August presented on the life and witness of Sr. Thea. Today, Kayla joins me to talk about this remarkable woman, this servant of God, this witness to Christ’s life in an especially American context. Kayla herself is a doctoral student in theology and ministry at Boston College. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she served in Campus Ministry here at the University of Notre Dame, and also as a rector for one of or woman’s residence halls. Kayla is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. Kayla August is a vibrant, up-and-coming leader in the U.S. Catholic community. Maybe you heard her preach on Christmas Eve 2020 on Catholic Women Preach. Maybe you heard her speak at the 2021 FutureChurch Feast of St. Mary of Magdala. Maybe you heard her just last month at Saturdays with the Saints at Notre Dame University speaking about Thea Bowman. Like I said, she’s all around. Currently, Kayla is pursuing a doctorate in Religious Education with an emphasis in preaching. You might find yourself asking *why* would a Black, Catholic, U.S. woman pursue such a degree? You’ve got to hear her answer to that question. She is flying on faith, and she reminds us that journeys are one step at a time. Preaching for Christmas, Kayla August encourages us to find the glorious even in our simpler Christmas celebrations this year:   "This Christmas, may need to be a simpler time than ones in the past...But, in these seemingly simple moments, let us not miss the miraculous in our midst. The small moment when the GLORY OF GOD is around us and we are awakened to the miraculous hidden in the ordinary. A moment filled with deep peace and great joy."  Kayla August serves the Notre Dame University (South Bend) community as the rector of Lyons Hall, an all-women’s and historic halls of Notre Dame. Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, she received her bachelors from Loyola University of New Orleans followed by two years of service work with Americorps. She then worked in Loyola’s Mission and Ministry department as a graduate student intern while working toward her masters in pastoral counseling from Loyola University’s Institute of Ministry. Kayla is now pursuing a doctorate in preaching as a way to serve God by giving her voice to the church. She also plans to use her education to lift-up and empower marginalized voices of those often overlooked in the universal church and in our world. She dreams of a Church truly alive with Christ, and she believes her vocation is working toward making that Church a daily reality!
