Ben Harman, Director of Stills: Centre for Photography in Edinburgh, speaks to Ada Trillo. Ada Trillo is a Philadelphia-based photographer. Born and raised in the U.S/ Mexican border region of Juarez and El Paso, her work focuses on sex trafficking, climate and violence-related international migration, and long-standing barriers of race and class. Her projects have been featured in international publications including The Guardian, Vogue, Smithsonian Magazine, and Mother Jones. Trillo’s work is held in the Library of Congress, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and other institutional and private collections. Her many awards include a First Place in the Tokyo International Foto Awards (2019), a British Journal of Photography Female In Focus Best Series Award and The Me &amp; Eve Grant from the Center of Photographic Arts in Santa Fe (2020). Trillo’s images have been exhibited in the US, Japan, Luxembourg, Italy, England, France, and Germany. She holds degrees from the Istituto Marangoni in Milan, and Drexel University in Philadelphia. In 2021 she was accepted into Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism in the International Center of Photography in New York. In this episode, Marta Valier talks with Ada Trillo about her latest exhibition, La Caravana del Diablo 2020. Trillo is a Philadelphia-based photographer, born and raised in the bi-national border region of Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. In her work, she focuses on the violent impact of the U.S. border policy on migrants. Trillo is the most recent affiliate to the Tom &amp; Ethel Bradley Center, and in this episode, she explains how she set up to fly to Honduras to join the caravan in January 2020, where she joined the migrants fleeing violence and poor economic conditions and documented their travels through Guatemala and into Mexico. Trillo’s work is in the Library of Congress, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and several other collections. She is the recipient of the British Journal of Photography’s Female In Focus 2020 Best Series Award and has been featured in The Guardian, Vogue, Smithsonian Magazine, and Mother Jones, among other publications. 10. Ada Trillo on documenting the caravan in 2020

Ada Trillo is a Philadelphia-based artist who was born and raised on the Mexican/American border. She had long wanted to do a body of work which focused on the social problems in Mexico to raise awareness and try to make a difference. Several years ago, she was afforded the opportunity to capture a series of photographs centering on the lives of prostitutes in her hometown of Juarez, Mexico. This series was meant to depict and problematize the adversity these women must overcome in their daily lives. She discovered that the majority of the girls in the brothels are not from Juarez but from different parts of the country who had arrived in Juarez with the hopes of emigrating to the US. Many of them arrived with their families and were left behind. Others had been abducted. Ada wants to emphasize that she likes these women, and wants others to understand their circumstances. They have no healthcare and no access to rehabilitation. If they cannot attract clients, they go without food. Ada is carrying out this project because she wants to document an ugly reality that must be exposed. She also hopes to raise funds for the nuns to help more girls and to collaborate with the Coalition Against Trafficking Women, an international organization dedicated to protecting human rights.
