Maria Rendon is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy, and she has recently written a book titled Stagnant Dreamers that describes the challenges they face coming of age in the inner city and accessing higher education and good jobs and demonstrates how family-based social ties and community institutions can serve as buffers against neighborhood violence, chronic poverty, incarceration, and other negative outcomes.

Interview with Maria Rendon

In this episode we sit down with Maria Rendon, professor at UC Irvine where she conducts research and teaches in the topics of urban sociology, immigration, poverty and social inequality. Maria was the first one of her family to attend college and received her PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard University. Maria is a single mom and has two beautiful little girls, she shares with us tips on how to talk to kids about subjects like race, politics and immigration. Education and information is the best tool we can give our children to prepare them during this rough political and social climate we are living in today.
