This week, Katie talks with Dr. Malaika Horne, a public policy scholar and author, and her sister Gwen Moor, curator at the Missouri History Museum, about their inspiring mother, Flora. Flora Horne was born in Mississippi to sharecropper parents in 1916. During the Great Migration of the 1930’s, she moved to St. Louis with her family. There, she married and raised six children at the height of the Jim Crow era. Although Flora was deprived of a full education, she instilled the values of learning in her children from a young age. To Flora, education was the wisest path to independence and prosperity. In this episode, Malaika and Gwen discuss the racism and violence that their family faced in the middle of the 20th century. Flora Horne. "She Broke the Cycle." A Conversation with Malaika Horne and Gwen Moore

Dr. Malaika Horne is the author of the new book, Mother Wit. She is also the founding director of the Executive Leadership Consortium – College of Business Administration at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL). Previously she served as a professor at Webster University and has served as the managing director of Narcotics Service Council. Dr Horne is a journalist, academic writer, and serves as a leader and consultant to a number of community organizations and non-profits. Gwen Moore is the curator of urban landscape and community identity with the Missouri History Museum. Moore is responsible for the museum's remarkable exhibit, "#1 in Civil Rights," which closed in Aprli 2018 after a nearly 400 month run in April 2018. These celebrated sisters are daughters of Flora Horne, the inspiration for Dr Horne's book, Mother Wit: Exalting Motherhood While Honoring a Great Mother. Hank asks Moore and Horne to talk about their mother and wonders what the world would be like if their were more Flora Horne-like mothers in our communities today. Dr. Malaika Horne, is the founder and Director of the Executive Leadership Consortium at the University of Missouri, St Louis (UMSL). The consortium seeks "to prepare students and a cross-section of career professionals to become effective leaders to meet current and future demands in response to regional, state, national and international needs."   Art Perry is a retired pharmacist, current Democratic Committeeman for St Louis' 28th Ward, and he serves on multiple boards across the city.
