In today's episode, we're speaking with Piet Klop. Piet leads PGGM’s company and market engagement efforts around water scarcity. He is also developing PGGM’s 20 billion euro “investing in solutions” portfolio, including impact measurement.PGGM are the largest pension fund service provider in Holland, with €220bn AUM. They manage the pensions of more than 4.4 million participants of various pension funds. Through its proprietary CO2 Index (based on Trucost emissions data), it also excludes from its portfolio persistent violators of the Global Compact Principles, as well as the least carbon-efficient companies. In addition, it tries to minimize negative impacts on people and planet through active ownership of its investments, engaging with its investees. In 2017, with The Impact Management Project, they mapped their portfolio against five of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to try and calculate the global impact of their funds - and for such a forward-thinking organisation in terms of responsible investing, the results were quite alarming. As water resources expert he worked at the World Bank and United Nations. Piet holds master’s degrees in Water Resources Management (Wageningen University, 1989) and Applied Environmental Economics (University of London, 1999.

PGGM: Impact mapping a €220bn investment portfolio - with Piet Klop

How much influence can you have as an individual investor? This was the question I asked Piet Klop, he’s senior advisor on sustainable investment at the Dutch pension fund PGGM and he’s a leading voice in pushing these big organisations to consider their impact.While many pension funds are now using the SDGs as a framework to map their impacts, PGGM had already set themselves some key themes to tackle, well before 2015 when the SDGs started to build momentum for the private sector to make a change. From an Australian perspective, this is even more interesting because the Dutch don’t get a choice of pension fund. If you’re in the health and welfare sector, PGGM is the manager your stuck with. While in Australia, most of us have the freedom to choose our super fund, and more and more people are voting with their feet, and switching to a fund that better aligns with their social and environmental values. Piet has a lot of energy for this stuff and it was great to dig into the challenges of measuring impact for companies who are publicly listed, as well as how much of the credit an investor should take for a company’s good work.
