Stepping on a bomb was the last thing Sargent Zach Stinson remembered after insisting on leading his Marine Battalion while serving in Afghanistan. Six days later, Zach woke up at the Bethesda Navy Hospital - both legs were amputated above the knee, his right thumb, and parts of other fingers were also severed.   Zach stopped counting surgeries after the thirty-fifth.  He then came to realize his attitude and mindset were the only things in his control, the rest was in God’s hands. After two grueling years of rehabilitation, he returned home. An eighth-place finish in his first Marine Corps Marathon without serious training showed Zach’s tremendous talent. Fast forward to a birthday challenge where he won his first Ironman in Lake Placid in 2019. This Chambersburg Pennsylvania native began to devour Marathons, and Paratriathlons—leaving the competition in his wake.  Zach is the 2021 Paratriathlon National Champion; 2021 World Cup Triathlon Para Cup Champion contested in Alhandra, Portugal; and the 2021 Boston Marathon Handcycling Champion. It was an honor to host this fearless competitor on this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. A Fearless Life with Zach Stinson 

My next guest is a Marine veteran whose life was dramatically changed during a tour in Afghanistan. Zach is a double amputee, but doesn’t let that slow him down. In today’s episode we talk about life after his injuries and how much ass he has been kicking ever since.

On November 9, 2010, Zach Stinson, a Marine fighting in Afghanistan, stepped on an IED. The blast took both of his legs, and a few fingers. But, the blast did not take his zeal for life. Listening to him talk about this experience, you would never think that he's faced great challenges and extremely low moments trying to get back to the normalcy of everyday life. He has handled his injuries with the same bravery and stoicism he displayed when taking "point" while searching the village compound that hid the IED that changed his life forever. He's even looked past his injuries and "limits" and started competing in triathlons as a double amputee. Ep. 135 – Zach Stinson (Marine Combat Vet)

I was honored to host and record an episode with Zach recently.  This is such a powerful episode.  I reached out to Zach after finding out he completed the full distance triathlon in Lake Placid. Zach’s life changed on November 9, 2010 when he was in Afghanistan and IED explosion left him with no legs and missing fingers.  This is quite remarkable that he lived through this IED explosion.  I, myself, have been blown up by IEDs also in Afghanistan, but I was mounted in a vehicle, not on foot like Zach.  Zach is a true hero.  We talk about his story and the race at Placid.  The most important thing I took away from this conversation is the great amount of gratitude he has for life, others, and his ability to be alive.  He had a team help him prepare for the race and completed the race as well.
