On our second episode of The Native Experience, I have the privilege of chatting with Rachel Carruthers, the platform partnerships lead at Canva, to discuss the creation of truly native experiences for diverse audiences. Rachel shares her experiences working on Canva's product and marketing localization and internationalization efforts, eventually growing to over 120 locales. We also delve into the anthropology of language and how language shapes culture and perception. Additionally, Rachel shares her cultural background and unique perspective on bringing that to Australia. She worked to ensure that every user had a truly localized experience (be it on the Web App, iOS or Android platforms), while leading cross-functional globalization initiatives to support Canva’s long term international growth strategies. In March 2023 she shifted gears to focus on some of Canva’s key platform partnerships, driving comarketing opportunities and amplifying new product launches. So far, her favorite thing about her time at Canva has been the convergence of language and design, and the anthropological aspect of how culture can affect their users' design experience and platform behavior. Prior moving to Sydney, Australia to pursue her Masters Degree in Media, Rachel was working as a Senior Localisation Project Manager back home in Silicon Valley, servicing high-profile tech enterprise clients. Rachel is deeply passionate about language, food and culture, and loves to travel whenever she can. Rachel Carruthers is the Head of Internationalisation and Localisation at Canva, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company that makes graphic design simple for everyone. Since launching in 2013, Canva has grown to become one of the top 20 unicorn companies in the world, with a current valuation of $15 billion dollars USD. Canva now has over 50 million monthly active users across 190 countries and 100 different languages. More than 1,400 team members work together across continents to achieve the company's mission, which is to empower everyone in the world to design anything and publish anywhere. Originally from California, Rachel spent several years working on the vendor side of the Localization industry, servicing high-profile tech enterprise clients in Silicon Valley. In 2015, she moved to Sydney, Australia, to pursue a Master’s degree at the University of Sydney, and she never left. After a brief stint at a digital marketing agency, Rachel joined Canva in 2017.
