Kathleen is a mother to three boys. When her children were struck by autoimmune issues she became aware of the dangers that exposures to toxic chemicals pose in our children’s environment. For many years, Kathleen has been doing her part to encourage communities to eliminate children’s exposure to toxic pesticides on school grounds and in parks. With the help of scientists and medical professionals, she led the movement in Irvine, CA by starting with the schools, and then working with a group to approach the city. Kathleen is a founding member of Non Toxic Communities, an Accredited Organic Land Care Professional (AOLCP) and served as Head of Climate and the Environment on the Irvine Mayor’s Council. She now works in the private sector, helping more districts, cities, and homeowner’s associations adopt organic landscaping methods, and continues to support Non Toxic Communities in an advisory role. She is now representing Contact Organics, an effective non-toxic herbicide that is safe to use around cities, schools, farms, and homes. She became aware of environmental factors when searching for ways to improve their health. Over the years, she spoke with doctors, farmers, retired government scientists, university researchers, and others who all told her the same thing, namely, that pesticides used on crops and in the environment have a definite negative effect on children’s health. Fully 54% of US children now have a chronic health condition, and the numbers are climbing. Wanting to do something about this, she co-founded Non Toxic Communities with her partner Diana Carpinone of Dover, New Hampshire, and they both began to work to bring about change in their communities with the help of Beyond Pesticides. Working through her District’s PTA, she led a movement to convince her school district, and then her city, to adopt organic methods and to stop using toxic products for maintenance. Kathleen served on the Mayor’s Advisory Council attending to environmental matters. The City of Irvine now enjoys parks that proudly post signs touting organic maintenance. Her sons were diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called PANDAS or PANS. Kathleen had learned about GMOs, but never made the link between her children's health and possible side effects of eating this chemical laden food. When Kathleen learned from a farmer that livestock often suffer from similar issues, and that their health improves when taken off of Genetically Modified feed, she decided to change her family's diet to organic to see what happened. Sure enough, their health improved. She is now spreading the word among parents and the nation about GMOs so that people can get educated about this subject and improve the health of their families, too. She co-founded Moms Across America with Zen Honeycutt to plan a massive educational campaign to get the word out to everyone at parades across the nation on July 4. Supporters of GMO labeling will march in parades holding banners and passing out flyers so that everyone can learn about just what GMOs are, and to ask for labeling.
