I could make a really good argument why it’s not, and I actually tried to do that in my discussion with Dima Feldman, the Vice President of Product Management at Altair Semiconductor, now a Sony Group Company. EP073 - Evolution of cellular IoT chipsets empowering business model innovation - Dima Feldman, VP Product & Marketing, Sony Semiconductor Israel

In this episode of the IoT For All Podcast, Dima Feldman of Altair Semiconductor joins us to talk about everything Cellular IoT, including its biggest advantages, challenges, and how we’ll likely see the role of cellular change in the near future.As the VP of Product Management and Marketing at Altair Semiconductor, Dima is responsible for company product management, marketing, and solution architecture, and collaborates with customers and partners on innovative IoT solutions. Dima brings more than 20 years of experience in semiconductors and communication technologies and led systems engineering at Netline Communication Technologies before joining Altair.To start the episode, Dima shared what cellular IoT actually is and how it differs from cellular technology most people think of - smartphones. Although cellular IoT devices and smartphones use essentially the same technology to connect and transfer data, there are some major differences in the requirements of the devices themselves. Because of the difference in the service they provide, while latency can be a big issue for smartphones, IoT devices are often more concerned with coverage.Dima also spoke to some of the advantages of cellular IoT and where cellular really shines, as a connectivity option. “Cellular networks exist virtually anywhere people live,” Dima said, “if I need to connect a device, the network is there.” And it’s not terribly expensive, either. Besides its widespread availability, Dima said there are security benefits to taking your data off of a local network, as well. And for anything mobile? Cellular is an easy pick if your IoT solution is expected to move around.Speaking to the future of cellular IoT, Dima shared that the supply chain and logistics space will likely see a big boost, especially as cellular options for IoT become cheaper.
