In today’s episode, Aimee chats with screenwriter Paula Redlefsen about exploring and sharing our inner emotional landscapes through creativity, embracing and examining complexity in writing and in life, and both creating and destroying stories as a spiritual practice. They begin with a discussion on the liberating function of creative expression and navigating the strong emotions and obstacles along the way. Paula shares insights on integrating masculine dramatic storytelling and feminine epic storytelling and a helpful film metaphor for understanding and approaching the mind. They close by exploring the power of intention and resistance, the practice of de-storying, tango and improvisation as present moment meditations, and the magic of collaboration. Paula is a native German who studied acting in NYC after being raised on a boat. She discovered film from both sides of the camera when she returned to Berlin, working in English language productions, TV movies and international cinema in different positions, such as actress, video operator, dialogue coach, casting director and assistant director. She also made her own short films and studied film history at HFF Potsdam Babelsberg, screenwriting at Ars Nova, and script development at Masterschool Drehbuch, Berlin. Her focus turned from directing to writing scripts once she became the mother of two children and now writes female driven film scripts and series, with the occasional play or short story in between. Her favorite genres are comedy and drama; and the heart-opening, gut-wrenching, laughing-with-tears blend of these two. She is also the founder of Scriptdock.com, a social media network for screenwriters.
