As promised, we finally have our first international guest on the podcast.  From his quaint home in the forests of Slovenia, wetplate collodion photographer and printmaker Borut Peterlin sits down to talk about his journey from carpenter to photographer. Matching the utility of his 1972 Landrover, Borut hasn't confined himself to just one-off wetplates, but instead continues a tradition of alternative printing techniques to fully recognize his vision. And while he may have an accent, don't get him confused with Borat. Very nice!

As promised, we finally have our first international guest on the podcast.  From his quaint home in the forests of Slovenia, wetplate collodion photographer and printmaker Borut Peterlin sits down to talk about his journey from carpenter to photographer. Borut Peterlin je eden naših najbolj samosvojih, priznanih in mednarodno uveljavljenih mojstrov fotografije. Širša javnost se ga morda najbolj spomni po na moč prepoznavnem, enkratnem in duhovitem fotografskem urednikovanju pri tedniku Mladina, rubrikah Striptiz in Portret. To je svojevrstna ironija, saj je od nekdaj večji izziv videl v reportažni fotografiji. Peterlin je tudi ustanovitelj Fotopuba, Festivala dokumentarne fotografije, ki je bil prvič organiziran leta 2001, sicer pa diplomant znamenite FAMU, praške Akademije za film, televizijo in umetnost. Podiplomski študij je opravil na Londonskem kolidžu za tisk.Njegov curriculum vitae je zavidljiv. Leta 2000 je prejel štipendijo v Fabrici, Benettonovem raziskovalnem centru za komunikacije, in začel delati s kontroverznim fotografom Olivierom Toscanijem. Svoje fotografije je razstavljal že po vsem svetu (v galeriji Konica-Minolta na Japonskem, galeriji K2 v Turčiji, Martin-Gropius-Bauu v Nemčiji, galeriji Host v Veliki Britaniji, na festivalu fotografije Kaunas v Litvi, v muzeju Doland na Kitajskem, na festivalu Photo Fringe na Poljskem, v Muzeju sodobne umetnosti v Ljubljani itn.).   Prav po njegovi zaslugi je oživel tudi fotografski studio slovitega celjskega fotografskega mojstra Josipa Pelikana, ki je danes del Muzeja novejše zgodovine Celje. Raziskovanje pionirskih starodavnih tehnik pa ga je začelo zanimati pred skoraj desetletjem, ko je v Londonu obiskal razstavo legendarne fotografinje Sally Mann in obstal kot uročen pred fotografijami, narejenimi v tehniki mokri kolodij na steklu, ki so jo pred več kot sto sedemdesetimi leti uporabljali pionirji fotografije. Tako se je začel njegov vzpon do ene največjih sodobnih avtoritet tega ustvarjalnega fotografskega postopka.   Borut Peterlin je luciden umetnik, ki navdih za svoje ustvarjanje najde v obredjih bivanja v naravi in z njo, prebiranju Eckharta Tolleja in izvajanju metode mrzlega tuširanja in kopanja Wima Hofa. Je tudi oče treh otrok in Indijanec po duhu (opomba avtorice teksta). Njegove ustvarjalne in navdihujoče dogodivščine lahko spremljamo tudi na kanalu na YouTubu s Topshit Photography vlogi. Another show that's been long in the making, and it comes three weeks in to a UK lockdown due to COVID-19, with photographers trying to make sense of it all, trying to find motivation, maybe dealing with anxiety or frustration. Borut Peterlin is a man consumed with his art-work, seeking self-expression through a +100 year old medium, communing with nature, exploring the meaning of rituals in life. Borut’s YouTube channel is a must watch, Simon you need to play it through your TV in your living room, it comes to life then and is much more interesting that Casualty…… We didn’t talk about gear at all, this was a thoughts and ideas show and was all the better for it, but listen and see for yourself.
