Jeffrey Blair (and his wife Pamela)  are the owners and founders of EyeSeeMe African American Children's Bookstore. While raising children of their own, they sought to change a key problem with their education: the absence of books that reflected their own history and cultural heritage. Jeffrey and Pamela began curating books that featured African American children as main characters, so they could SEE themselves in the stories, protagonists, and overall narratives. Not surprisingly, their children became incredibly high achievers, attending Harvard, Columbia, and Bard colleges.Seeing the success that these books brought to their own family, Jeffery and Pamela started EyeSeeMe African American Children's Bookstore to bring it to the larger community. Episode 55: Jeffrey Blair (EyeSeeMe)

Joining us today is Jeffrey Blair, Co-Owner of Eyeseeme African American Children's Bookstore. Jeffrey and his wife Pam opened their brick and mortar store 5 years ago based upon their own experience raising their children and finding it is difficult to find black children's literature. Jeffrey believes that education starts with self and says that he has seen first-hand how the reflective images in a book can resonate with African American children. In this episode: Jeffrey talks about his career in law and what experiences made him transition to be an entrepreneur in a different field. Jeffrey explains his life long passion of being involved in youth programs. Never being able to identify with characters in a book can be a difficult thing for a child who is learning how to read.  This is the struggle that one family had as they attempted to educate their children in a mostly Caucasian world of books.  That is when Jeffrey and Pamela Blair first began to realize that they and other African American families were facing challenges of finding books to help their children feel good about their culture and heritage. Now, as founders and owners of the EyeSeeMe bookstore, Jeffrey and Pamela can stock not only household bookshelves with reflections of the reader, but schools across the nation as well.
