Prog-Watch 544 - In Conversation with Doug Rausch of Rausch

Doug Rausch is a driven man, a man who releases no music before its time – or at least until he’s darned good and ready. He’s been creating clever, intricate, piano-based music for more than 15 years, and yet he’s only released two albums in that time: 2009’s Rausch and this year’s Book II. Each shows the craft of an artist trained in jazz and classical, but also the tastes of a guy who loves Guns N’ Roses. For the most part, Rausch is flying under the radar, but the new record could change all that. It boasts the talents of numerous luminaries – guitarists Gary Wehrkamp and Brendt Allman of SHADOW GALLERY, drummer Mark Zonder of FATES WARNING‘s fame, legendary SPOCK’S BEARD keyboardist Ryo Okumoto, and master engineer/mixer Rich Mouser. The end result is a cornucopia of styles and sounds and genres, all mixed together and stamped with the unique vision and voice of Doug Rausch. But he’d rather you not label it as progressive-rock. Recently, Doug spoke with Sonic Perspective’s Mark Boardman about his background, his influences, his personal angst, and whether it will take another eight years for his third album to come out.
