Since her time in the Army as a K9 handler, Mary Cortani has understood how our four-legged friends have healing benefits.  She founded the organization Operation Freedom Paws - a non-profit that empowers veterans and individuals with disabilities to restore their freedom to live life through a special therapeutic canine-human relationship. In this episode, Dr. Springer and Mary talk about the therapeutic benefits of canines for many different types of trauma survivors and how Operation Freedom Paws has incorporated Stella’s innovative SGB treatment into their programming.

Episode 17: Mary Cortani: Repeated Exposure, SGB, and the Power of Our Four Legged Friends

Four Paws, Two Feet, One Team written by Connor Quinn and Mary Cortani and illustrated by Susan Szecsi is a picture book about a rescue puppy named Dakota that grows up to a service dog. After being found in a field, she is rescued by Mary Cortani, who runs an organization called Operation Freedom Paws. Dakota trains to be a service dog throughout the book and then gets matched with his forever person, a veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Both Dakota and his owner learn from each other and provide support for each other through difficult situations.  This picture book teaches the reader many important lessons. When reading this stop your child will learn about service dogs, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and celebrating the achievements of both veterans and their service dogs. Throughout the book, the reader learns the etiquette of how to approach a service dog, their uniform and much more. Additionally, Four Paws, Two Feet, contains valuable information about the types of service dogs, requirements of service dogs and what tasks a service dog provides for their owner. She also realized there are thousands of dogs waiting for loving homes and that many of them have the right temperament for service work. Those factors combined to form a strategy that would dramatically reduce the waiting time.The approach turned out to do so much more: It gave the vet a sense of mission and purpose, and as the training proceeded, it provided a sense of accomplishment and renewed confidence as well.
