Maureen Cavanagh is the founder of Magnolia New Beginnings, a nonprofit peer-support group for those living with or affected by substance use disorder. She has been recognized by The New York Times, CNN, and other outlets for her work fighting the opioid crisis and the stigma that surrounds it.

“While they are still with you, you let them know you love them. You let them know you believe that they can get well. That’s probably the only thing you can help with because we are really pretty powerless.” First, Maureen Cavanaugh, Founder and President of Magnolia New Beginnings and author, is a mother of four. When raising her children, she did everything by the book. Maureen brought her children to church, they had family meals together, her children held jobs, they knew that they were loved, and yet her daughter stumbled into substance abuse. While missing the signs of her own daughters’ addiction, she has a determination to not allow another family to fall victim to this life-altering disease. Today, her daughter faces struggles but has been successful and doing fantastic for the last 14 months!
