Mark Seddon is in conversation with three leading Palestinian filmmakers discussing their latest works and the complexities and challenges facing Palestinian cinema today.  Roua Naboulsi, Festival Coordinator of London Palestine Film Festival will kick things off, introducing us to the Festival and the events lined up over the next two weeks.  Lina Al Abed is a documentary filmmaker, born in Damascus to a Palestinian father, and Egyptian mother. Her most recent film, Ibrahim: A Fate to Define (2019) took seven years to make, tracing the journey of her investigation into what happened to her father who disappeared when she was six years old in 1987 and did not return. Najwa Najjar is a Palestinian writer and director. Since 2000, she has worked on both documentary and fiction films, and her critically acclaimed debut feature film was Pomegranates and Myrrh (2009). Her second award winning feature film, Eyes of a Thief (2014), was the Palestinian submission for the 2015 Oscars Best Foreign Film and the Golden Globe Awards. Najwa’s latest film, Between Heaven and Earth (2020), received a ten minute standing ovation at the world premiere in November at the Cairo International Film Festival, and her screenplay was subsequently the recipient of the prestigious Naguib Mahfouz Award. Farah Nabulsi is a Palestinian British filmmaker and human rights advocate. She has written, directed and produced short fiction films exploring Palestine related topics that matter to her. Farah has spoken and screened her work internationally at film festivals, universities and at the United Nations. Her current film, The Present, underscores the importance of freedom of movement as a basic human right.

Behind the Lens with Palestinian Filmmakers: Farah Nabulsi, Najwar Najjar & Lina Al-Abed

Since its occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem in 1967, Israel has practiced a policy of Jewish-only settlement expansion over Palestinian land. A land that the International Community designated as the territory of a future Palestinian State.   Jewish-only settlements constitute a violation of international law and international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, but they have remained a stable policy of consecutive Israeli right-wing and left-wing governments. Even with the upheaval inside Israeli politics, the Israeli cabinet still had the time to green-light the construction of over 500 new settlement units in the Bethlehem region, in May. And as protest and legal challenges to forced evictions, of Palestinian families, continue in East Jerusalem, we take a look at the the American non-profits supporting Israeli settler expansion in the occupied territories. Mira Nabulsi speaks with journalist Alex Kane.  He is a contributing writer for Jewish Currents and +972 Magazine. We do a deep dive into The Present exploring its themes, the thought process behind certain characters and exchanges, and the notion that we learn just as much about Palestinian cultural tendencies of hospitality and compassion as we do about the realities of life under Israeli military occupation. Farah also clues us into the only part of the Present which is fictional and reveals why she chose to focus this film around the checkpoint - just one of the settler-colonial state’s violent many structures and apparatuses. We discuss the importance of language in a liberation struggle and the interplay between the dehumanization of the Palestinians and the oppressor’s capacity to oppress (shoutout Stanley Milgrim). Farah and Lara talk Fanon and Michael recall Chomsky’s warnings about the emergence of Judeo-Nazi tendencies in Apartheid Israel. Farah suggests Lara and Michael go into radio.

This week, we're looking at the Palestinian struggle through the lens. We're joined by Palestinian-British filmmaker Farah Nabulsi, whose short movie "The Present" has been nominated for the Oscars and BAFTAs. Farah’s life changed totally, after she visited Palestine and witnessed the everyday indignities that Palestinians endure. She decided to become a filmmaker and took it upon herself to shed light on the injustices meted out to Palestinians since their mass displacement in 1948. She’s also the founder of many non-profit production companies and online educational platforms covering news from the Israeli-occupied territories.This episode reflects on Farah’s commendable journey as an artist who dons the hat of a storyteller, director and producer and brings to life gut wrenching stories of Palestinians displaced and left to die.  Farah talks about the role she plays as a mother and a woman that arms her with the skills and unending pursuance to continue writing stories that she strongly resonates with. Having  the experience and first-hand knowledge of the injustice prompted Farah to do more than give charity and sympathy as that was certainly not enough. Through her work, she aims to re-humanize the Palestinians and draw attention to the atrocities they face at the hands of their persecutors.
