[00:00:03] Erin: [00:00:03]  Thanks so much for having me.   [00:00:08] Etta: [00:00:08] You are a busy, busy lady. So I will ask you the million dollar question. Why did you start writing cozies? Tell us all about it?[00:00:15] Erin: [00:00:15] about it. Oh my goodness. It's kind of a funny story because I started writing cozy on accident years and years ago. Um, I had this blog called the apartment manager's blog. Okay. And I started, cause I was an apartment manager, my husband was in dental school, I had kids and I was working full time as apartment drains, just encountered the craziest things. So I started this blog anonymously and I had all of these other apartment managers sending in like their horror stories and pictures and stuff. And I got quite a following. And then I got, um, people were like, you should write a book, you should write a book. And I thought, Oh, I should totally write a book. And so. I didn't know how to write a book. So I just looked up, you know how to write a book to me, you need to have a conflict. And I was like, well, murderous conflict.So I'm gonna there, right? Cause book with a funny book with a murder in it. And I didn't even know that cozy mystery existed. And Gemma holiday actually. Uh, reached out to me. She's the one that kinda took me under her wing and was like, you write cozy trees, let me help you out here. And so that's like, my first series is called the Cambria Kline mystery series, and it's about an apartment manager.[00:01:33] And that's kind of how I fell into cozy mysteries. It wasn't even something that I really intended to do, but now I love the genre. I read it, I write it. It's my favorite [00:01:42] Etta: [00:01:42] so funny. Um, do you, um, write in any other genres or anything else you're working on? [00:01:48] Erin: [00:01:48] Well, I'm working on a thriller with my friend and Catherine  [00:01:52] She writes, um, really great, uh, romcoms and chicklet and some women's fiction. And her and I are both wanting to explore this thriller. So we're working on a thriller together. Um, I have no idea when that's coming out, but that's kind of the only branch out I'm doing, which isn't. Hugely. It's still expanding, you're exploring other stuff.[00:02:15] Love humor and writing. Um, cozies [00:02:21] Etta: [00:02:21] so when you're, where you're writing a mystery, how do you know who done it or, you know, are you a big outliner or do you fly by the seat of your pants? [00:02:29] Erin: [00:02:29] I found that the only way for me to write productively was to outline. So I carry a notebook with me at all times and I gener know who done it.[00:02:39] When I start sometimes as I'm nearing the end, I think, Oh, it would be a great twist if I just switch up the, the murder and kind of go back and filter in the clues. But usually I just have to figure out, okay, I start a book with, okay, who died? Who killed them? Why did they kill them? And then I kind of build my story around that.[00:03:01] Etta: [00:03:01] Awesome. Awesome. Yeah. Let's, let's talk a little bit more about that. What's your, your writing process? Do you have a favorite place? Time of day sort of routine? [00:03:10] Erin: [00:03:10] I ha, well, I have five kids, [00:03:13] Etta: [00:03:13] so no routines. [00:03:14] Erin: [00:03:14] Okay. Well, I need to say it that I have five kids, and so the youngest one is five and he does school part time.[00:03:23] So I write every day from 10 o'clock. Until 1230 and then I write in the car for at least an hour and a half while I'm waiting for practices to finish, whether it be basketball track or whatever sport the kids are playing. And so for me, I, I usually sit on my bed. I wish I could be one of those authors that, you know, had a stand up desk or on a treadmill.[00:03:49] I'm on my bed with my laptop. And I pop in my headphones and listen to like instrument, instrumental music, study music for on like Spotify. And then I just write. But I usually have a notebook. I carry a notebook with me everywhere and I'm constantly writing. I'm working out plot ideas. I mean, that's something I feel like I'm doing almost all day.[00:04:13] Well, [00:04:13] Etta: [00:04:13] and when you're writing in the, um, in the car, are you. Like hen ready? Are you ready on your [00:04:18] Erin: [00:04:18] phone? Bring my computer with me. [Wow, that's dedication.] It's funny cause I've had other moms they like, what are you doing in there? Are you watching TV? I'm writing murder is what I'm doing.[00:04:33] The writing murder mysteries [00:04:34] Etta: [00:04:34] don't cross me. [00:04:38] Erin: [00:04:38] It's very hard to, when you've got a very tight schedule, I feel like I'm. You have to be really productive with your time. So I feel like when I do sit down and write, I turn off the internet and I write, I don't do anything else. [00:04:54] Etta: [00:04:54] Yeah. And with five kids.[00:04:56] That's how you juggle. So you have tons of releases coming out. Um, so microphones and murder, which is, which is already out, um, by Henry press was what really got me thinking about you. Obviously the podcasting thing and the duo. It was a really fun, you know, kind of true crime, um, nod. Um, but what other, um, um, releases do you have coming out and, and what readers, but it would be the best fit for those releases.[00:05:26] Erin: [00:05:26] Well I do. I feel like if you like cozy mysteries, that's, that's, that's what I write. I have a release coming out next Tuesday. It's the fourth book in my Kendrick climb mystery series, which is about an apartment manager. She's a single mom, and she lands his job as department manager and she first day on the job sheet, you know, there's a murder.[00:05:48] And so she ends up solving crime as she's. You know, trying to manage this apartment building filled with all these zany characters. And so the fourth book in that comes out and my publisher just put that on Kindle unlimited too, which is awesome. Which is fun cause I feel like if you're avid reader, if you devour books, then you know, Kindle unlimited really is a good resource.[00:06:12] Um,  I get that subscription sometimes you can get a lot of bang for your ] buck. How I know, and I feel like, and. That a lot of publishers are using Kindle unlimited now. They're putting their backlist on Kindle unlimited and stuff, so you can definitely get really, really good. Um, there's a lot on there now.[00:06:30] And so that comes out next Tuesday. Well, it comes out the 11th of March, March 11th. And then, um, I have the second book of microphones and murder in the podcasting sisters mystery that comes out April nine. And then in may, I'm going to be started releasing a new series called the almost good witch. And it's about a, uh, it's a cozy mystery series about a witch who has always been an evil witch her whole life.[00:07:00] And she's desperate to turn her life around and be good. And, um. So is she. That's, that's cool. Yeah. So it's kind of a fun little mystery. And then I have this series called the lost souls lane mystery, and it's kind of a paranormal. Any paranormal I write isn't super paranormal. It's very walks the line of realistic paranormal.[00:07:21] I don't even know if that's a thing, but deal with like other worlds or anything like that. I had this series about clearly the most popular series I write about. Um. A young girl, she's like 23 and she discovered that she could see dead people and these dead people come to her and she has to solve their murders.[00:07:39] And [00:07:40] Etta: [00:07:40] that's the Zoe one. Right? [00:07:42] Erin: [00:07:42] Okay. And so I'm going to release the six book in may for that one as well. And so that's all I've got going in for the first half of the year. At the second half of the year, I'm going to release some more books in those series as well. [00:07:56] Etta: [00:07:56] Ooh, I feel exhausted just listening to that.[00:07:58] I'm going to need to take a break after we're all done. Cause that is a lot going on. [00:08:04] Erin: [00:08:04] It is, you know, I realized, um. Maybe two years ago, I, I, with the rise of bingeing on Netflix and being in people, being able to watch an entire season in one, you know, in one sitting. And I noticed that people like that with their books, they want, they want to be able to finish the book and start the next one, you know?[00:08:23] And the next one. So I started writing and stockpiling these books so that I could release them. Like 2019 was a year rise. Just started. Releasing, releasing, releasing. So that, you know, if the reader picks up the first book, Oh, the second book is out now. Oh, the third book comes out next week, you know, so we can, you can know what happens in binge the books.[00:08:43] So that's kind of, I, I've been preparing for this for awhile, so I'm not writing the books right now. [00:08:49] Etta: [00:08:49] Oh, I, I can tell I, um, with the podcasting sisters, you know, I wasn't expecting a, a second one out for quite a while, and then boom. Yeah. Whiplash. And so you're, you've definitely got your timing down. And, and that stockpile, um, system is, is definitely keeping people intrigued.[00:09:07] It's working. So aside from all the sleuths that you write about, um, who's your favorite sister to read? So like, what's, what's one of those characters that just just stayed with you over a lot of years? [00:09:18] Erin: [00:09:18] Oh, bloody years. Well, you know, I'm, or just your favorite [00:09:22] Etta: [00:09:22] right now. [00:09:22] Erin: [00:09:22] You know, no commitments. I read so much and I listened to so much.[00:09:27] Um, you know what? I'm really loving right now. I want to make sure I get this right. Um, I've been reading this series and I want to get her name right. Um. And I, it's the Southern, it's by Amy Boyle, I think it's A M Y, B, O, Y, L E. and she writes a sweet tea, which is mystery series. And I am, I'm on book two and I love them.[00:09:55] They're funny and it's, and there's the mystery element. And I love those. I just bought, um, Tanya, and again, I read so much, but I don't always. I felt, uh, you're not [00:10:12] Etta: [00:10:12] on trial here. There was no test. [00:10:15] Erin: [00:10:15] Like, when I say words that I'm always reading that I'm like, did I say that right? Tanya capes, she's another Henry Cress author.[00:10:22] She has a series called beaches, bungalow and burglaries. So I just started that, and that one's really funny. Um, I really liked this. K A P P E S, and read it all the time. She's actually awesome. Um. We had chatted on social media. Oh, cool. And so I really liked that. And of course, I love like Stephanie plum.[00:10:47] I mean, you got to go with the original bear. So [00:10:52] Etta: [00:10:52] what's the last cozy mystery that you read? Well, we'll try it. We'll try to narrow it [00:10:56] Erin: [00:10:56] down in full. I actually just finished, uh, the, uh, in that sweet team mysteries. Perfect. He would, uh, sweet tea, which is, it's called Southern magic, so I just finished that one.[00:11:11] It's about a girl who discovers she's a witch on her birthday and then finds out she's part of this coven and then is framed for murder. It's really cute. [00:11:21] Etta: [00:11:21] It sounds good. Sounds like a good [00:11:23] Erin: [00:11:23] sort of spring read too. Coming up. It is, and it's, I'm not from the South. I'm from California. I've lived here my whole life, so it's kind of fun to read about.[00:11:33] Other places, I guess, even though I think it takes place in Georgia, I can't remember someplace down South where they had to escape.[00:11:43] Etta: [00:11:43] So how can we keep, keep track of, yeah. Um, do you have a, a mailing list, a website, any social media that you, um, you know, are really consistent on. [00:11:53] Erin: [00:11:53] I write a lot. So I'm not the best social media person, but instead I keep the most, um, update the most is I update my, uh, Instagram the most probably I do like Instagram stories the most, and I don't even know what my Instagram handle is.[00:12:13] I think its author, Arun, has tried to keep it simple. Uh, it's, Aaron has, yes. It's author Aaron has author underscore, Aaron has. So on Instagram, I do have a Facebook readers group. Um, it's called the apartment managers books, and you can join that. And I give away a lot of books on there and I give away, I post, um, advanced reader copies, um, for my readers.[00:12:42] There. And then I do have a newsletter.
