In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Norm Hann about his passion for oceans, coastlines, and the powerful connection between people and the environment.  After a university basketball and high school teaching career in Sudbury, Ontario, Norm made the decision to travel west to enroll; in a wilderness guide training program in Vancouver. Upon completion he was hired as an adventure guide in the Great Bear Rainforest on the north coast of British Columbia.  In 2006, he was given the ultimate coastal honour of being adopted by Eva Hill into the Raven Clan and given the name T’aam Laan meaning “Steersman of the Canoe.” In 2008, Norm discovered stand up paddleboarding and with almost a decade of guiding experience under his belt in the Great Bear Rainforest, Norm Hann Expeditions was born.  Shortly after the first couple of sup trips to the Great Bear, the real threat of oil tankers traveling through the area began to take shape in the form of the Northern Gateway Project.  Norm decided to paddle the proposed tanker route. The route was from Kitimat 400km south to Bella Bella. The expedition was called Standup4Greatbear and to inform everyone of what was at risk. Standup4Greatbear Society continues to promote the education, awareness, and protection of the Great Bear Rainforest and the Great Bear Sea, through conservation expeditions, featured talks and presentations.  In 2012, Norm was contacted by acclaimed filmmaker Anthony Bonello to bring the story of the threat to the coast to a larger audience. Shortly after recruiting talented photographer Nicolas Teichrob, the Stand film project began. The film highlights Norm’s 350km expedition along the coast of Haida Gwaii, the Heiltsuk students of Bella Bella building their own wooden cedar paddleboards, along with the surfing and coastal connection of waterman and Tofino local Raphael Bruhwiler.  Norm believes that as paddlers we have a responsibility to stand up for these places that give us so much and to protect these areas for future generations.  Norm Hann Expeditions can connect you with powerful environments so that you can build your own personal connections and experience the things in life that matter the most. Ever wanted to walk on water? Well, the closest you’re likely to come is by stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). I love stand-up paddleboarding. I first tried it almost 10 years ago. I was hooked—although, to be honest, I’ve kept it fairly casual. I love the perspective it offers over the water. I love the relaxing, comfortable nature of the sport. And I love that you’re very much in the water—sometimes right in the water—rather than detached from it.  Today, I’m chatting with two people who are far, far more experienced in stand-up paddleboarding than I am: Bruce Kirkby and Norm Hann. Both are experienced explorers and avid paddleboarders—Norm is a instructor and guide based in Squamish, British Columbia; and Bruce plies the dynamic waters around his mountain home of Kimberley, BC. They’re also both Mustang Survival ambassadors—and they’re multi-day stand-up paddleboard expeditioners. That’s right—this isn’t pushing around a pond on vacation. Taking a Stand with “Steerman of the Canoe” Norm Hann

For this inaugural episode of Salish Wolf, I sat down with internationally renowned paddleboarder and activist Norm Hann. I recorded this episode in March 2019, one full year ago. Since that time, a lot has happened for Norm, including turning 50, earning the number 1 and number 3 spots on Lonely Planet's "9 Best Long-Distance SUP Adventures" globally, and together we traveled to a BC coastal destination for an incredible 4-day bow building and personal growth retreat that I hosted through Anchor Point Expeditions. As Norm shares in this episode, he is always looking to grow as an individual and to impact others. His activism, expeditions, and films in the Great Bear Rainforest demonstrate this so beautifully. Even at 50, Norm continues to win paddleboarding races and to lead global excursions. He is a man with a clear purpose that he follows with the utmost integrity. In 2006 Norm was adopted into the Raven Clan in the community of Hartley Bay, British Columbia, where he had been coaching basketball. He was given the name T’aam Laan meaning “Steersman of the Canoe.” It was two years later that paddleboarding came into Norm’s life, and he immediately knew he was on the right path. Since then he has paddled all over the world and has been featured in countless magazines and in the breathtaking documentary "Stand". Norm also happens to be a husband, father, and struggling with a heart condition that has recently impacted his life in profound ways. Through it all, he continues to deepen his connection and seek new ways to give back even more. For this inaugural episode of Salish Wolf, I sat down with internationally renowned paddleboarder and activist Norm Hann. I recorded this episode in March 2019, one full year ago. Since that time, a lot has happened for Norm, including turning 50, earning the number 1 and number 3 spots on Lonely Planet's "9 Best Long-Distance SUP Adventures" globally, and together we traveled to a BC coastal destination for an incredible 4-day bow building and personal growth retreat that I hosted through Anchor Point Expeditions. As Norm shares in this episode, he is always looking to grow as an individual and to impact others. His activism, expeditions, and films in the Great Bear Rainforest demonstrate this so beautifully. Even at 50, Norm continues to win paddleboarding races and to lead global excursions. He is a man with a clear purpose that he follows with the utmost integrity. In 2006 Norm was adopted into the Raven Clan in the community of Hartley Bay, British Columbia, where he had been coaching basketball. He was given the name T’aam Laan meaning “Steersman of the Canoe.” It was two years later that paddleboarding came into Norm’s life, and he immediately knew he was on the right path. Since then he has paddled all over the world and has been featured in countless magazines and in the breathtaking documentary "Stand". Norm also happens to be a husband, father, and struggling with a heart condition that has recently impacted his life in profound ways. Through it all, he continues to deepen his connection and seek new ways to give back even more. Norm Hann: Saving the Great Bear Rain Forest

Norm Hann is an outdoor adventure guide focused on SUP tours in Squamish, BC.  He recently came down to train with Erik in Nosara and Erik realized that Norm's story was worth sharing.  Not only is Norm living a passion based life in the standup world, he's also been actively protecting the BC coastline from oil tankers.  He produced Standup4GreatBear, a film where he paddled the proposed oil tanker route, and was then featured in Stand Film.
