In this sixth episode of Challenger Chats our host Adam Spencer is joined by Joanne Mathews, Founder and CEO of Ten Health &amp; Fitness.  Ten is a wellness business that bridges the gap between the medical community and fitness markets. It was instrumental in pioneering the London boutique fitness sector back when it launched in 2007 and has since grown into the UK’s largest provider of Dynamic Reformer Pilates (think traditional pilates but taken to the next level) and has a fast growing clinically-led wellness offering. They’ve now launched a live stream and on demand fitness &amp; wellness platform, and in 2019 raised equity capital from Foresight to drive their expansion. In this fascinating chat we talk through the origins of Ten as a result of an unfortunate but ultimately happy accident, Jo’s fundraising journey, and how it’s made her a more effective leader, and take a deep dive into the current state of the fitness and wellness sector. Challenger Chats Episode #6 with Joanne Mathews, Founder of Ten Health & Fitness

Joanne offers her clients all the skills and experience she gained in her 20-year career as a marketing and sales executive. She finds her bliss in helping teams and leaders grow, communicate, and achieve. She facilitates team building and communications workshops with organizations interested in developing a true competitive advantage. She also works one-on-one with leaders who communicate in a way that brings about real change. Some of her recent clients include Central Oregon Community College, Deschutes Brewery, AmeriCorps VISTA, NAVIS, HydroFlask, TEDxBend, and the Deschutes Land Trust. Joanne graduated from UCLA with an Economics degree and began her career in residential property management. After her next stop in corporate recruiting, she went back to school, earning her MBA from UC Davis, emphasizing marketing, and market research. She then landed a position in product development at Charles Schwab &amp; Co., Inc. She enjoyed 17 years at Schwab in a variety of positions, most recently as Chief of Staff to the President of Schwab Institutional, and as National Vice President of the Schwab Advisor Network.In this episode, Dean Newlund and Joanne discuss:What you say and present and how you create a connection to it. Creating a captive audience and using it as a way to bring about change.The look and direction of public speaking in the future.Follow your intuition on what information needs to be presented to the audience and ways to deliver it.Key Takeaways:What is the goal? From a basement Studio in Notting Hill and a staff of 4, she has grown Ten into one of the best-respected brands in the sector, with 9 Studios across London and a team of over160 people. As CEO, Joanne leads the business, and is responsible for all aspects of performance, operations, strategy and people management, ensuring that Ten continues to thrive, develop and remain relevant in a constantly evolving sector. So in addition to its trademark Dynamic Reformer Pilates workout, Jo has continued to grow Ten’s offer and reputation with the addition of in-house Physiotherapy and sports massage alongside HIIT, TRX, Yoga, Stretch and Barre classes.
