This week on Beer is a Conversation, Pete and Matt catch up with Feral Brewing founder, Brendan Varis. It’s been  12 months since Brendan announced that he had sold his brewery to Coca Cola, and  10 years since he first brewed Hop Hog and so we have plenty to talk about. We discuss what has changed since the sale, how much the beer scene has changed since he unleashed Hop Hog on the market and it turns out we can add him to the long list of brewers that don’t get NEIPAs, though it seems he does quite like the emerging Brut IPA. After such a big week in WA beer news we decided to call on a veteran of the State craft brew scene, Brendan Varis. His Feral Brewing Company will notch 15 years in the game next month and it will be a big celebration to honour great beers, like Hop Hog, Sly Fox, Watermelon Warhead, Warhog .... the list goes on. We also reveal that the next Tusk day at Feral will be November 17 so save the date in your diaries. The Sip also touches on the big announcements in WA brewing - the opening of the Whitfords Brewing Company, Cheeky Monkey getting on board with Singapore Airlines and Gage Roads securing the beer contract for the new Perth Stadium. This week is our first edition of splitting the podcast into two audio files for interviews and news. Part A yields our regular Radio Brews News news conversation between Matt Kirkegaard, Pete Mitcham and Australian Brews News Editor James Atkinson. Part B, entitled Beer Is A Conversation, showcases our chats with Andrew Ong of 2 Brothers Brewing Co, and Brendan Varis of Feral Brewing Co.   Andrew Ong: Andrew founded the 2 Brothers Brewery in Morrabin (VIC) with his brother Dave after they were able to acquire parts from a defunct brewery in Times Square in New York City. Marking the 10th Anniversary of 2 Brothers, Andrew discusses with us some of the finer details on how they established their brewery and keep their business going through the peaks and troughs of the craft beer industry. Brendan Varis: Brendan is the owner of Feral Brewing Company and was also the Head Judge of the Australian International Beer Awards this year. We talk to Brendan about how the AIBAs work and what the various award levels mean, and also discuss Feral’s recent use of hop extracts in their experimental beer release, Finn Diesel.
