State Writer Laureate Ernestine Hayes has spent a good part of her life bearing witness.  The author of the American book award winning, Blonde Indian and the Tao of Raven, Hayes is known for bringing out the connections between all things.  She is also a member of the faculty at the University of Alaska Southeast.  She says to better understand our present we need to look our past, and the history of oppression and genocide of indigenous peoples. In The Tao of Raven, using the story of Raven and the Box of Daylight and relating it to Sun Tzu's Art of War, Ernestine Hayes expresses an ongoing frustration and anger at the obstacles and prejudices still facing Alaska Natives in their own land, while sharing her own story of attending and completing college in her fifties and becoming a professor and a writer. Ernestine Saankalaxt’ Hayes belongs to the Kaagwaantaan clan of the Eagle side of the Lingit nation. Her first book, Blonde Indian: An Alaska Native Memoir received the American Book Award in 2007 and was chosen as the 2016 Alaska Reads selection. Ernestine Hayes received her MFA in Creative Writing and Literary Arts from UAA and is an assistant professor of English at UAS.  This event is sponsored with Alaska Center for the Book.

Ernestine Saankalaxt’  Hayes belongs to the Kaagwaantaan clan of the Eagle side of the Lingit nation.  Her memoir, Blonde Indian: an Alaska Native Memoir, received the American Book Award in 2007 and is the 2016 Alaska Reads selection. According to Jonas Lamb (Juneau Empire), Blonde Indian “celebrates Tlingit culture, the strong connection between the people, this magnificent land, the animals and the spirits, it also brings to light the historic and contemporary fallout of colonialism and racism.  The structure of the book will challenge many and the content will confront others, but all readers will find they are changed by the experience.”Ernestine Saankalaxt’  Hayes received her MFA in Creative Writing and Literary Arts from UAA and is an assistant professor of English at UAS.
