Peter Homulos recounts how he went from being a geology student to a director of the National Inventory Programme, the precursor of the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), all before he was 30 years old. The mandate of the Programme was to maintain the records of Canada’s cultural properties, but it evolved into creating a computerized inventory of collections to facilitate the sharing of information. It was also responsible for research and development on information management, collections documentation standards and collections management systems. From a modern perspective, it is difficult to convey how groundbreaking and even controversial this initiative was.

Peter Homulos nous raconte comment il est passé de simple étudiant en géologie à directeur du Programme du répertoire national, le précurseur du Réseau canadien d’information sur le patrimoine (RCIP), avant même d’avoir 30 ans. Au départ, un des objectifs du programme était de tenir un registre des biens culturels du Canada. Mais bien vite, il a été question de créer un répertoire informatisé des collections qui faciliterait l’échange de renseignements et la recherche-développement sur la gestion de l’information, les normes de documentation des collections et les systèmes de gestion des collections. Il est difficile aujourd’hui d’expliquer à quel point c’était une initiative avant-gardiste, voire controversée.
