In the final episode of the series we speak with CEO of the British Youth Opera and Founder Director of Opera UK, Dr Nicola Candlish.  We hear Nicola’s story, from studying music at Durham University to building a career around her passion for the arts. We get an insight into an industry that, as Nicola says, is often shrouded in mystery and glamour and we get a real understanding of the challenges the industry faces in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.   The arts in particular have been devastated by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, and we hear Nicola’s thoughts on some of the challenges ahead when the doors to theatres around the country can open again – as well as how we can help the industry recover when they do!  We explore Nicola’s role as a CEO, we find out about the British Youth Opera and the valuable work they do, and we hear all about Opera UK and how the organisation came to be founded. We also discuss her current MBA and Nicola shines a light on the ways in which management education and formalising your knowledge of business and strategy can add real value to the work that you do.

22. Dr Nicola Candlish: You need a lot of passion to create something really magical.

Nicola began music at school with the standard issue recorder, but soon took it upon herself to put down a deposit on a saxophone, much to the horror of her parents who were left with the bill.  She went on to study music at Durham University, from her Bachelor of Arts through to her PhD, before starting out as a Stage Manager working in many of the UK opera companies – from English Touring Opera to Buxton International Festival and Opera Holland Park.  She also tackled the joy of British pantomime seasons, and travelled the world on tour with Shakespeare’s Globe.  Moving on to the Royal Academy of Music as Producer and Opera Company Manager, she negotiated the challenges of producing opera over two years in external venues while the academy was refurbished, and managed a visit from the Royals. Taking on her current role as CEO of British Youth Opera, Nicola was able to use the skills she had learnt along the way to inform her work heading up a company that provides professional opportunities for singers, musicians and technical trainees all of whom are all at the beginning of their operatic careers.
