There's uncertainty and unease amongst the people of Hong Kong.Tensions are rising following China's decision to pass a controversial national security law, allowing it to punish political uprising more easily.Hong Kong correspondent Jennifer Creery told Mike Yardly one pro-democracy figure has already fled.She says others are making contingency plans."Many of the popular countries of choice are Taiwan, UK, Canada and Australia, so at the moment there is uncertainty but it is very much still early days." Creery says those born before the 1997 British handover to China, hold a British National Overseas passport.She says the UK is offering them the opportunity to work and study in the UK for five years - with a path to citizenship."I am sure the UK Government is also sceptical over whether or not 2 million people are just going to uproot their lives and move to the UK, but certainly there is this avenue available for the time being."

China's Communist Party celebrated its 70th anniversary in power with a parade Tuesday showcasing the country's economic growth and newest weapons.The nationally televised event opened with a military honor guard carrying the Chinese flag through Tiananmen Square, the country's symbolic political heart, before thousands of spectators who waved flags. Artillery guns fired a salute.President Xi Jinping, wearing a gray Mao jacket, and other Chinese leaders, including former Presidents Hu Jintao and Jiang Zemin, watched from atop the Gate of Heavenly Peace at the square's north end.The event marks the anniversary of the Oct. 1, 1949, announcement of the founding of the People's Republic of China by then-leader Mao Zedong following a civil war.The parade follows Xi's promise to allow Hong Kong to manage its own affairs despite anti-government protests that have embarrassed the ruling party ahead of the year's highest-profile propaganda event.The parade through central Beijing is due to include 15,000 troops and more than 160 aircraft.Chinese news reports say it might include a new long-range nuclear-armed missile and a supersonic drone aircraft. Military spokespeople have declined to give details.

Police fired chemical-laced blue water and tear gas at protesters who lobbed Molotov cocktails outside the Hong Kong government office complex Sunday, as violence flared anew after thousands of pro-democracy supporters marched through downtown in defiance of a police ban.A mixed crowd of hardcore protesters in black and wearing masks, along with families with children, spilled into the roads of the Causeway Bay shopping belt and marched for over 2 kilometres to the central business district. Some waved U.S. and British flags, while others carried posters reiterating their calls for democratic reforms.Police had turned down a request by the Civil Human Rights Front to hold the march, but the demonstrators were undeterred, as they've been all summer."I feel this is our duty. The government wants to block us with the ban, but I want to say that the people will not be afraid," said one protester, Winnie Leung, 50.The march disrupted traffic, and many shops, including the Sogo department store in Causeway Bay, one of Hong Kong's largest department stores, closed their doors.Protesters burned Chinese flags and tore down banners congratulating China's ruling Communist Party, which will celebrate its 70th year in power on Oct. 1. In familiar scenes, some protesters smashed glass windows and surveillance cameras at a subway station exit.Hundreds of protesters later targeted the government office complex, throwing bricks and gasoline bombs through police barriers.
