Bhagavad Gita - Dr. Graham Schweig Smithsonian Associates, Art Of Living Series... Today we’ll be talking about After the Bible and the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita is the most beloved of sacred texts in the world. Graham M. Schweig, a professor of religion at Christopher Newport University and published translator of the Bhagavad Gita, illuminates some of the exquisite passages in this Hindu philosophical poem and examines their rich narrative context. He provides an overview of the story behind the text, its major themes, and reveals how a work created around the 2nd century A.D. poignantly addresses the universal problems of the human condition: the intrinsically conflicted soul and the mix of happiness and suffering, goodness and evil, and beauty and horror the world holds. These dichotomies are symbolized by the dilemma of the protagonist Arjuna, whose heart is shattered as he is about to engage in a battle against the evil that also pits him against those he loves. Graham Schweig is a Professor and the Director of Studies in Religion at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He is also affiliated with The Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and the Avanti Schools Trust in the UK. He earned his doctorate from Harvard in comparative religion, specializing g in sacred Sanskrit literature. A student of many traditional teachers, he has been to India seven times and has practiced meditational and heart-centered yoga for over 45 years. He has offered numerous seminars and lectures in the US and Europe, and has delivered over three dozen lectures on religion and yoga at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. His over 100 articles, chapters, and books include a widely-used translation of the Bhagavad Gita (Harper Collins). With his life-partner Catherine, he is co-founder of The Secret Yoga, which presents workshops on the philosophical foundations of yoga, the deeper dimensions of meditation, and other important themes.
