Former All Black Carl Hayman has today revealed he is suffering from early onset dementia. The legendary tighthead prop told Dylan Cleaver's "The Bounce" that the 450 professional games he played have taken a severe toll on his brain He's now joined the class action suing world rugby for failing to protect players from the dangers of head knocks. Another former All Black who has come out in support of the class action is Geoff Old.  Geoff's wife Irene Gottlieb joined D’Arcy Waldegrave.  LISTEN ABOVE

Concerns for other rugby players that have suffered head knocks.  Former All Black Carl Hayman has been diagnosed with early onset dementia - aged 41. He told The Bounce he's joining a lawsuit with 150 former professional players, claiming rugby's governing bodies didn't protect them against concussions.  Irene Gottlieb is the wife of former All Black and dementia sufferer Geoff Old, and told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's a serious issue. She says there's no acknowledgement of duty of care here in New Zealand. “There’s still no support network to lean on.” LISTEN ABOVE

Former All Black Geoff Old has been in contact with British-based lawyers about his post-playing medical condition.A lawsuit is being prepared in the UK involving up to 70 players suffering varying cognitive issues they believe relate to their careers.They're concerned cognitive issues -- ranging from post-concussion syndrome to suspected CTE -- have been caused by concussions suffered playing the game.Old's wife Irene Gottlieb told Heather du Plessis Allan he suffers all day headaches and mood swings."He has sensitivity to light and needs care on a day-to-day basis with simple tasks [such as] decision making."She says they have been "fighting the good fight" for 15 years to help retired players and look at the health problems, and there needs to be accountability. The action's being readied by lawyers in the UK and will likely target several national rugby bodies within that jurisdiction.Sources indicate it'll argue rugby authorities have known about, and subsequently underplayed, the risks associated with repetitive head injuries for decades.
