Episode 6: Nicola Redpath

I was born in 1973 in Lusaka, Zambia. My parents and the majority of my 4 siblings were born and raised in Scotland. We moved to Prince George when I was a toddler and spent most of my early childhood in the west side of Prince George, Starlane subdivision to be exact. I always had pets in my life and was forever begging my parents to let me have a horse. When I turned 13 and was beginning to become a rebellious teenager, my parents thought it was a good time to move out of the city to Pineview and occupy my time with looking after the animals they knew I loved so much. My menagerie of animals grew, I began to compete with my horses and trained my first horse at the age of 16. I left Prince George to go to college in Kingston, Ontario but returned just over a year later. I missed my home town, my family and my animals. I worked as a personal trainer in a local gym and took up the sport of body building, which I competed at for several years. In 1995 I began my career as a Correctional Officer at Prince George Regional Correctional Center. In 2001 I started Prince George Animal Rescue Society (formerly Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue) after attending a horse auction in Quesnel. I had come to the realization that there was a tremendous lack of alternatives for unwanted horses in the North. I continued with the rescue after marrying my former husband in 2003 and we had two children in 2005 and 2006. I left corrections in 2007 and went back to college. I worked for Northern Health as a care aide doing home support for 3 years. During that time my husband and I separated and in 2009 my current partner Grant (affectionately known as the stable boy) became a blended family of 7. We moved from a 10 acre property in Beaverly to an amazing 160 acre farm in Pineview.  Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue evolved into Prince George Animal Rescue Society. I expanded the rescue to include dogs and cats. I left my job at Northern Health and ran the rescue full time. I also began doing bailiff work part time and got my certification to be a riding instructor to help bring in extra company to keep the rescue afloat. Having three children in various sports and the additional part time jobs on top of running the rescue leaves little time for hobbies but I do try to get up riding in the mountains with my horses and my dogs occasionally.  Once upon a time when my life wasn’t so chaotic, I enjoyed camping, gardening, and traveling. I aspire to be a better cook and a better gardener one day.
