The reason this job is so hard is not just because we believe it to be so, but because a lot of the expectations of what headteachers have to do day-to-day... are implicitly demanding of a very high stage of adult ego development.”   This week we speak to Dr Neil Gilbride, Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Gloucestershire. We discuss his research into School Principals at Different Stages of Adult Ego Development: Their Sense-Making Capabilities and How Others Experience Them. They could just seem to put their finger on the problem and they think it is some kind of divine intervention, and it isn’t. Actually the way they make sense of the problem incorporated so many different perspectives and views that by the time they got there everyone felt they’d been heard and everyone could see where the headteacher was coming from.”

He regularly works across Education and beyond., supporting organisations in Leadership, Management and Education: He is an  academic advisor to Ambition School Leadership, the Chartered College of Teaching, St Georges Widening participation programme and  several other organisations within Education and beyond the sphere of Education Neil’s career over the past 14 years has spanned across a range of areas in Education as a practitioner, academic and researcher. As a teacher and Teach First Ambassador, he taught secondary science for 5 years. He has researched across a range of areas in Education as a social social worker, carer and specialist in Special Educational Needs, counsellor, widening participation mentor and School Governor.  His academic background is diverse and he has worked across Biomedical Science Special Educational Needs, Adult Developmental Psychology and Educational Leadership and Policy. I have a unique, multi-sector experience as both a practitioner and researcher. I have over 12 years professional experience across the public, voluntary and private sectors as a teacher, researcher, middle leader, school social worker, carer, counsellor and governor.   My academic background is equally diverse – stretching from Biomedical Science, Special Educational Needs through to the Leadership Development and Organisational Behaviour. In working with individuals and organisations,  my multi-disciplinary background delivers new insights and fresh ways of thinking. Primarily, I am a psychologist.
