St. Paul: "An Urban Biography" by Bill Lindeke   Author Bill Lindeke will share stories and research from his new book,  St. Paul: An Urban Biography, a concise history of St. Paul, featuring  stories that are familiar, surprising, and sure to change the way you  see Minnesota’s capital city.   How did the city of St. Paul come to be where and what it is, and what  does that show us about the city today? Bill Lindeke provides intriguing  insights and helpful answers. He tells the stories of the Dakota  village forced to move across the Mississippi by a treaty—and why  whiskey sellers took over the site; the new community’s close ties to  Fort Snelling and Winnipeg; the steamboats and railroads that created a  booming city; the German immigrants who outnumbered the Irish but kept a  low profile when the United States went to war; the laborers who built  the domes over the state capitol and the Cathedral of St. Paul; the  gangsters and bootleggers who found refuge in the city; the strong  neighborhoods, shaped by streets built on footpaths and wagon  roads—until freeway construction changed so much; and the Hmong,  Mexican, East African, and Karen immigrants who continue to build the  city’s strong traditions of small businesses.   This thoughtful investigation of place helps readers to understand the  city’s hidden stories, surrounding its residents in plain sight.   Bill Lindeke is an urban geographer and writer who focuses on how our  environments shape our lives. History Revealed St. Paul, with Bill Lindeke

Bill Lindeke started blogging about sidewalks and cities almost 10 years ago. The catalyst was reading Jane Jacobs. When we spoke, Bill was working on his dissertation about bicycling and cities. He’s a native of Minnesota and serves on the St. Paul Planning Commission and Transportation Committee.   the great anti-planner Professional planners have grown to love her. But Jane Jacobs was a harsh critic of planners — particularly the way common sense was routinely overruled in favor of cronyism. Bill lived in New York City for a while. Walking was a normal mode of transportation. (You know, the thing Jane Jacobs used to write so much about?) Jonathan Franzen published a book of essays called How to be Alone. In it, he discusses The Death and Life of Great American Cities — Bill would never be the same!   “7 Reasons Conservatives Should Embrace Bikes” I’ve told you this before. We wouldn’t be burdened with sprawly junk infrastructure without government-subsidized cronyism. (Yes, I’m choosing to use that term twice in a single post. Take note!) Bill Lindeke wrote a list of reasons political conservatives should embrace a bicycling culture:  Bikes are cheap Freedom from foreign oil Ultimate personal responsibility You can fix it yourself You’re out in the elements Bikes support local business Freedom from rules  We spend the most time on the last two. Everyone loves small, local business. Well, that’s what everyone claims. People who ride a bicycle as a means of transport (not just recreation) support small businesses at high rates. It’s intuitive. Bicycling fits neatly into the older commercial fabric of established communities. Today, our state and local regulations demand so much infrastructure — so much space — that it’s hard for local business to survive, much less compete. Bill talks about the importance (or rather the heartache) of subsidized parking. He mentions Donald Shoup’s excellent book The High Cost of Free Parking (it’s not available for Kindle, but I still recommend it).   NO DANCING ON SIDEWALK Nannies. Not all of us had one growing up. But our government is full of them. No running over there. No standing here. No spitting. No loud music. No sandals made from peanut dust. A bike-friendly culture is a freedom-loving culture. Do you love freedom? Then love streets that are comfy to ride on a bike! There are some distinct differences between people who identify themselves as libertarian and those who identify as conservative. But both groups claim to support individual liberty. Would bike-friendly infrastructure be part of a libertarian paradise? Listen to Bill’s explanation and see what you think. (And if you need a primer on libertarianism, watch this Walter Block video.)   “…but if you just raise the gas tax…” Roads are hugely subsidized by general fund revenue. Very little gas tax money goes for anything other than road funding. Ben Hamilton-Bailee was on the show in 2013 talking about shared space. That’s the idea that pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists — everyone — can share public street space. (After you listen to Bill, be sure to check out Ben’s Part 1 and Part 2.) Bill wrote about something he called Tax-Cut Urbanism. He was trying to find some common ground among politically-diverse people who are trying to figure out how to pay for infrastructure. Here’s the pitch: A city adopts blanket 20 mph speed limits and gets rid of all stop lights and related signage, saving most enforcement and crash-related costs and cutting local taxes by 20%. The “20 for 20 Plan”.   bi-partisan discrimination against human beings Republicans and Democrats have been propping up subsidized road infrastructure and new highway projects for decades. The two major parties may have different reasons for it, but the results are equally devastating to traditional neighborhood development and to local economies.
