Capturing source metadata, incentivizing reproducibility, and protecting whistleblowers are steps we can take to ensure science remains honest.In this episode, Satyen interviews Dr. Elisabeth Bik. Elisabeth is an experienced microbiologist whose groundbreaking work in scientific integrity has led to more than four thousand potential cases of improper research conduct. She also founded the blogs Microbiome Digest and Science Integrity Digest, and was awarded the John Maddox Prize for "outstanding work exposing widespread threats to research integrity in scientific papers" in 2021. Dr Gisela Kopp and Dr David Labonte talk to Dr Elisabeth Bik, a microbiologist turned science integrity consultant. Dr Bik focuses on the identification of scientific misconduct and fraud in the academic publishing system. Her work has resulted in hundreds of retractions and corrections and has attracted considerable attention, positive from the largest part of the scientific community; less favourable by some of those affected by her reports. Her investigations have led to published papers and the reporting of her findings to major scientific journals, resulting in the correction and/or retraction of several papers. The work Dr. Bik does is important and I believe, somewhat underappreciated. Dr. Bik regards herself as a "scientific sleuth" in the area of image duplication, where she uses her own two eyes to spot potentially fraudulent or duplicated imaged within scientific papers. Her investigations have led to published papers and the reporting of her findings to major scientific journals, resulting in the correction and/or retraction of several papers. The work Dr. Bik does is important and I believe, somewhat underappreciated.
