Paul Lemley has an eye for opportunity and creating the right solution for the right moment. He founded Lemley Media, a digital marketing consultancy, and over the years founded HiveCast, and then more recently founded MKE Strong. He's based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Opportunity always starts with observation. Early in on the COVID-19 situation, Paul observed that the fragmentation of information is exacerbated in a crisis. More specifically, businesses and restaurants have Facebook, Yelp, and many more platforms that perpetuate fragmentation of information. All of the local publications were building lists of businesses that were remaining open, but all of those lists were fragmented themselves. Paul used a no-code app called Glide App to create MKE Strong, where he aggregated the fragmented lists into one source. In about three days, MKE Strong had roughly 1,000 users. Now, the user base is about 2,800 users with 100–200 daily visits a day. The crisis forces us to turn inward, and to our own communities that we live and work in. All of a sudden, we are concerned about the well being of the restaurant down the street that we never thought would close. MKE Strong is a way for Milwaukee and its businesses to meet that moment. One of the reasons that I pushed on the aspect of blue-ocean opportunities is because I figured Paul would share an insightful perspective on MKE Strong, and he didn’t disappoint. Even though Paul’s not going all in on MKE Strong, the initial audience growth and traction serves as a conversation piece about how to differentiate business model like that in the future. Listing-type businesses — Angie’s Lists, TripAdvisor, Yelp are helpful when making purchasing decisions but consider the difference between JP Power &amp; Associates, Moody’s Ratings in finance, or the Michellen Restaurant rating. The latter have created a defacto standard in their industries. With the first group, there is a level of relativity that it’s hard to know which reviews are representative of “you.” For the “expert review” business model, they are creating an aspect of demand among the supply of stakeholders that want to be a part of that and capturing value because of the credibility behind the rating. The dynamics of business models are an act of creativity and ingenuity.
