Matt Jung is the CEO and co-founder of Comfort Research, maker of Big Joe products. When Matt and his co-founder started their business, they didn’t know the first thing about culture. But when their company expanded and they had to hire employees, it became clear that they needed to identify core values and use them to drive their business. Today Matt is sharing his insights that he has gleaned from many years of trying strategies and finding what really works.

Using Core Values to Drive Your Business with Matt Jung

Matt is Managing Director of The Fort. He is a Los Angeles based serial entrepreneur and consultant who has launched over 5 companies. He has been actively involved with The Fort since its inception to ensure that Mammoth’s initiative is executed properly and well resourced enough to deliver long term results. Matt works directly with the mountain leadership, Mammoth COO Mark Brownlie, and Alterra CEO Rusty Gregory, to ensure the vitality of the program. His inside the ropes perspective provides tremendous value to the project as he understands first hand how initiatives like these require space, community, resourcing, entrepreneurship and hustle in order to take shape.   Prior to The Fort, Matt started Wellen, a beach lifestyle and clothing brand that was sold to Huckberry. Matt was also involved in an international licensing deal with Uniqlo for Wellen.

How can you expect to build a culture around these supposed “core” values if you as a leader can’t even remember them all? Cut them down to the few that describe the uniqueness of your organization the best. Reinforce your culture. It’s one thing to create effective core values, it’s another to actually enforce them. The best way to do this is to establish systems and processes that uphold and promote your culture. What are ways you can reinforce real-life examples of people living out your core values? Solve problems with creativity. Not all problems can be solved with money. Yet for some reason, many organizations seem to try. Instead of throwing money at your problems, give your people a chance to solve them using their creativity and imagination.
