Richard Wentworth is an artist based in London. "Without feeling sorry for myself, I feel like a bit of a misfit […] I don’t really have a tidy sense of where [I belong]. I want to be effective. Conversation with Richard Wentworth - Artist - Part 1

Richard Wentworth-Ping (Facilitator, Executive Coach and Consultant) joins the workplace podcast to share over 30 years of his experience of Learning and Development (L&amp;D). A truth sayer with his direct  communication style especially towards trends in L&amp;D. Richard provides his learnings that will help organisations make learning more effective. Changing behaviours, changing mindsets, changing cultures, changing the way people lead, manage and communicate.   Richard's view is that organisations don't change. People change. If enough people in an organisation change, then the organisation is changed, as is the culture. Richard is not convinced by the idea that change has to be hard, nor that 70% of change initiatives fail. Change can be achieved and there's plenty of evidence it can be enjoyable.   The way to develop capability, build habits, change behaviours and impact the business results and metrics that matter is very like getting fit: the person who wants to get fit has to do the work and exercise. The personal trainer can provide input, methodology, encouragement, support but the sit ups are yours to do. This podcast is essential listening for people interested in Learning and Development for rethinking learning in the workplace.

Episode 37: Rethinking workplace learning. What organisations can do better to make learning effective with Richard Wentworth Ping.

This week’s guest is the British sculptor Richard Wentworth, who chooses five objects that are meaningful in his life. Born in the late 1940s, he grew up in the suburbs of London and was educated at Eton College and then Middlesex University. He assisted Henry Moore as a teenager and in the early 1980s, along with contemporaries Tony Cragg and Bill Woodrow, became part of the New British Sculpture movement, which assembled everyday objects in pop, kitsch and witty ways and was seen as a reaction to the minimalism of 1970s sculpture.Over the years, his prodigious output has seen him build sets for Roxy Music, work with Azzedine Alaïa and teach at Goldsmiths University – where his students included Damien Hirst and Sam Taylor-Johnson, and he became a key influence on the Young British Artists. He has held major exhibitions all around the world, although perhaps his most enduring project is Making Do and Getting By, his long-running series of images of everyday objects used for something other than their original function: a boot wedged underneath a door to hold it open, for example, or a cigarette stubbed out on an upturned bottle top. He has held eminent positions such as Master of Drawing at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford University, and Head of the Royal College of Art’s Sculpture department. He was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 2011. He lives with his wife in north London and in 2018 begun working with Hospital Rooms, the charity that revitalises mental health hospitals with contemporary art. With host Danielle Radojcin.

His work often focusses on the idea of objects and questions our understanding of them within the context of our daily lives. In this episode of life in Scents he talks to Jo Barratt about his relationship with smell. Chemical, glue and workshop smells sit alongside a consideration of how we think about and relate smell in a wider sense. As well as many other things Richard muses on the meaning that humans ascribe to that moment after a thunderstorm and how ideas of ‘clean' or ‘dirty' relate to how we see ourselves within the world, as well as his hatred of perfumed candle shops.
