437. We talk to Mary Niall Mitchell about her research into Civil War pictures of freed         slave children. Union forces used pictures of white slave children who had been freed in New Orleans as propaganda and to raise money for schools for freed slave children. The Louisiana Anthology has added two articles about these children and these pictures that appeared in Harper's Magazine, "Slave Children" and "White and Colored Slaves."  Mary Niall Mitchell is Raphael         Cassimere Professor of History, Interim Ethel &amp; Herman L.         Midlo Chair in New Orleans Studies,  and Director of the         Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies. She is the author of Raising           Freedom's Child: Black Children and Visions of the Future           after Slavery (NYU Press, 2008) and has published         line for Harper’s Magazine, The Atlantic, the        Washington Post, the New York Times,         and Commonplace. Mitchell is one of five lead         historians for Freedomonthemove.org, a collaborative         crowdsourced database of fugitive slave advertisements housed at         Cornell University.This week in Louisiana history. St. Patrick's Church (the           second oldest church parish of New Orleans) along with St.           Louis Cathedral (the oldest) held the first masses after           Hurricane Katrina on Sunday, October 2, 2005. Mary Niall Mitchell, University of New OrleansCivil War @ 150: Is There Anything More to See?CUNY Graduate CenterNovember 3, 2011In this seventeen minute talk, historian Mary Niall Mitchell uses less known and difficult to understand photographs to discuss the use of photography as propaganda during the Civil War. Abolitionists knew that they needed to “shrink the distance between the enslaved and the free” in order to reach their target audience, the white middle class. They harnessed an early form of documentary photography as the ideal medium with which to reach this broad public. Anti-slavery activists used staged studio portraits of white-looking children dressed not as ragged but rather Victorian. Before-and-after photos showed the move from rags to respectability. Mitchell says that these images represent “the Civil War we don’t remember”—a set of ideas about children, race, and photography that have not been part of the narrative.
