I first came across Arthur’s work almost two decades ago when I was a student in Boston. I don’t know what led me to that gallery on that day, but I do know that the work I saw has remained vivid in my memory ever since. Arthur manages to combine so many elements that I find deeply satisfying; interactivity, narrative, humour, ingenuity and sometimes even found objects. But he takes it a step further – each piece lends itself to layers of contemplation, hinting at philosophical or existential questions about human existence; a search for meaning, the joy of the physical, and endless struggle. Kinetic sculptureartist Arthur Ganson on communicating through art, taking feedback, and intentionality

Heidi talks with Arthur Ganson, a renowned kinetic sculptor and mechanical artist. Ganson has long been the hero of a cult following of technologists and artists. With more permanent work than any other artist or innovator inside the hallowed halls of the MIT Museum, Machine with Paper and Machine with Grease are quiet, complex kinetic sculptures that mesmerize the viewer and pull on both the mind and the emotion. Ganson’s playful, wry humor was captured in Randall Okita’s award winning film “Machine with Wishbone.”

Arthur Ganson uses humble materials to create kinetic sculptures of humor, drama, and emotion.  His work has been shown around the world, and has been an ongoing inspiration for the 10,000 Year Clock project at Long Now.  His machinated gestures play with time spans that range from the epochal to the momentary.One of the touchstone pieces for the Clock project is the Machine with Concrete.  The input of the piece is a 200 revolution per minute motor, and after series of gear reductions it's output gear is cast in concrete.  Due to the multiplicative nature of the gear train it will take upwards of two trillion years to break the final gear.  Ganson will be discussing the theme of time in his work, and will be bringing a piece to show live at the event.
