Last week we brought you a discussion about the need for greater diversity in math education, and today we have a conversation about how to lift up marginalized voices if you are in a position of privilege.  Vanessa talks to Canadian thought leader Dr. Imogen Coe about what it’s like to advocate for equality in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), fields traditionally dominated by white men, and what it actually means to use your privilege for good.About ImogenDr. Imogen R. Coe was the founding dean of the Faculty of Science from 2012 to 2018 at Ryerson University in Toronto. She is currently a professor of Chemistry and Biology at Ryerson. Formerly the dean of science at Ryerson, she is currently a professor in the Department of Chemistry &amp; Biology. Dr. Coe is also a cell biologist studying the structure, function, regulation, &amp; distribution of a family of transporter proteins. Coming from humble backgrounds, she’s accomplished an enormous amount. Born in a little village just outside of Cambridge, England, to earning a Ph.D. at the University of Victoria, in Canada. Having brought her voice to Ryerson University she has also established the first faculty of science! She is a big advocate for women in STEM, diversity &amp; inclusion. She has a heightened awareness, and passion for always willing to step forward and address injustice and advocate for others to remove barriers and provide opportunities. So, please lean in and follow the transitions in Dr. Imogen Coe’s career and life that has led her to become the person she is today!

Dr. Imogen R. Coe is the founding Dean of the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University.  She is also a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biology and an affiliate scientist in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, Keenan Research Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital. In addition, she is a well-known advocate, speaker, and writer for equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM. She received her BSc in Cell Biology from the University of Exeter in the UK. She received her MSc and PhD in comparative molecular neuroendocrinology from the University of Victoria in Canada. Afterwards, Imogen conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California San Francisco and was later awarded an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Alberta. She served on the faculty at York University before joining the faculty at Ryerson University. In addition, Imogen is the recipient of Ontario's Premier's Research Excellence Award (now known as the Early Researcher Award). Imogen is with us today to tell us about her journey through life and science.
