The Prayer Chain was an alternative rock band in the early 90s, making thought-provoking grunge about the same time that Nirvana was also pioneering this new type of rock. Throughout the 90s, the band released several albums. Still, like so many band stories, they started to struggle with differences of direction, not only with the record label but also between their members. He didn’t have a ton of musical influence growing up as a child, but he became interested in music after attending a last-minute ski trip in Big Bear, California in the late 1980s.  He would soon fall in love with the guest band performing at the resort that weekend, setting his sights on becoming a professional musician. For almost 3 decades, he has been a fan favorite, capturing the attention of major record labels and being featured in popular music magazines. He has co-written songs for the veteran VBM band “Lassie Foundation” and the much loved “Prayer Chain”.  He would soon be the prominent songwriter for VBM’s own “Charity Empressa'', and is currently a partial owner of Northern Records. You can also hear his music on popular tv shows like “Buffy  the Vampire Slayer”.  Nowadays you'll be able to catch him on stage with his current band “Stranger Kings”. This week Scott is joined by Eric Campuzano; bassist for The Prayer Chain. An alternative Christian-based band, The Prayer Chain was formed in 1990 and have released 5 full-length studio albums as well as several EPs, live albums, and compilations. In this discussion, Scott talks to Eric about the early days of the band. The period in which The Prayer Chain started was a wildly shifting musical environment. With alternative and grunge music on an upsurge, the Prayer Chain had a niche sound that built their following in an organic way. Eric shares the pressures that went along between the band and the label during a turbulent time and how the band survived through it all.This talk is a great example of perseverance in the face of the adversity of the recording industry. The Prayer Chain's music has been embraced on a personal level with  Christian and non-Christian music fans alike. Their blend of lyrical subject matter has a balance that all audiences can relate to. Also of note are the challenges the band faced from the evangelical side of the industry.
