SCRIPTURE: Psalms 46 &amp; 131“Stillness is necessary not just for our humility, not just because it helps us listen, but because it demonstrates trust: God will do it! It’s true that He may use you to carry out His purposes… but we are not His commissioned soldiers, running out to change the world on His behalf! This is where our attempts at discipleship so often go wrong: we want to learn how to be better Christians on our own–’follow these 10 foolproof steps and your faith will grow! You will be happy! You will be holy! God will be impressed!’  But the whole point of being Christian is getting out of the performance-based economy of the world! When we choose stillness, when we choose to do  ‘nothing’ instead of ‘something,’ we’re practicing trust in God to see His own plans to the end. This isn’t easy to do, and it’s certainly not comfortable. But it’s what we can choose to do, if we really want to participate in God’s Kingdom rather than build up our own.” REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Evaluate your current relationship to the practice of “stillness” in your life: when are you still? Is stillness difficult for you? Why?Read and reconsider Psalm 46, from an historical viewpoint: why might stillness have been difficult for David? SCRIPTURE: Galatians 3.1-3 &amp; 1.10“The difference between a legalistic faith and a relational faith is in who we are focused on: in a legalistic faith, your eyes are always on your neighbors, to see if they approve of what you are doing–to see if they even see you at all! But in a relational faith, your focus is entirely–even blindingly–on the one you love. What Paul asks us to consider is who our behavior pleases–who the behavior is for. Under the old system of the Law, you could only love and serve God by proxy, through the medium of rule-following and ritual. Paul’s challenge is to try and remind the Galatians that Jesus is better: the rule-following and rituals are responses to a real and personal delight in being loved and known by God.” REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Reading Paul’s letter to the Galatians can feel a bit like eavesdropping on an argument. Why do you think it is important for us to continue to read and consider letters like this one? What do they contribute to the greater whole of Scripture?At the center of Paul’s frustrations with the Galatians is this verse, from chapter 3: “After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” What do you think this verse means in context? What does it mean to you?How would you define “legalism”? What makes it not only tempting but reasonable, at least some of the time?Paul’s response to the legalism of the Galatians is to insist that Jesus is enough–in fact, Jesus is better. Then, as you experience it, you can let yourself share it the way you share anything that causes you to feel wonder: not in an effort to convince someone of anything, but out of a conviction that what you have seen is simply, and absolutely, worth seeing.” REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:When was the last time you really experienced wonder? What happened? What did you do? Sometimes, “evangelism” can feel a lot like making a sales pitch. Have you ever had a conversation about faith with someone that took that sort of a turn? The big idea this week is that wonder is an antidote to this problem. Do you buy that? What do you think Kenny means by this? Kenny talks about 3 ways of allowing wonder to reshape our witness. The first one is drawn from the story of Mary “treasuring” and “pondering” the visit from the shepherds: we, too, can start by treasuring what we have seen and experienced of God. Try to talk this through as a group: what comes to mind?The second one is drawn from the story of the Woman at the Well: we can share what amazes us…even if it doesn’t seem like the most important part! How does this lesson connect to the story? How can it apply to your example in question 4? The final one is drawn from Mary Magdalene’s witness to the disciples on Easter morning: we can trust that what amazed us really is amazing…which means we don’t have to argue about it or prove it. We sense justice, but in a way that barely imitates the righteous character of God. We build communities and cities and nations, but in ways that are like sandcastles compared to the Kingdom of God. The point isn’t that we should feel small or pitiful or insignificant: the point is that in us, the mystery of God dwells.”  REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Where are you, at this point in the series? What are you learning? What questions do you have? What does it mean for us to “know” a “mystery”? What is so mysterious about Jesus? Have you ever thought of Him this way?The challenge for this week is to embrace mystery.
