Today we’re discussing an historical fantasy novel, The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros. Set in Chicago in the late 1800s, Romanian Jewish immigrant Alter Rosen is swept up in a city-wide mystery after his bestie and crush Yakov is killed (spoiler! Sorry not sorry but if you didn’t guess it was queer then what show do you even think you’re listening to?!). There’s an anarchist side kick, some possession, and lots of chaos! This book was suggested by the wonderful roro_suri on instagram, who always has really strong book recs. Many thanks to them and our Patrons for these book recommendations to start us off for Season 5.  Content warning for anti-semitism and sexual assault.   Recommend if you like… Devil in the White City by Erik Larsen (lit.ra.lly. a series of murders around the chicago world’s fair….sound familiar?)  If you like things like Outlander maybe? Episode 4: Aden Polydoros

Aden Polydoros spent much of his time as a kid in Arizona exploring the desert near his home. When he wasn’t searching for snakes and lizards, he was raiding the bookshelves of the local library. While still in high school, Polydoros won several awards, including a Gold Medal in the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for his short story “The Prisoner’s Orchestra.” Now attending college in Dortmund, Germany, Polydoros received a two book contract while still a college freshman in Northern Arizona University. His debut novel, PROJECT PANDORA, will be available on August 1, 2017 from Entangled Teen.Radio host and author Laura Moe spent most of her working life as a librarian and English teacher in central and Southeastern Ohio, but has recently moved to Seattle where she writes full-time. Moe is the author of YA novels PARALLEL LINES (Fat Cats, 2015) and BREAKFAST WITH NERUDA (Merit Press, 2016, ) named by the New York Public Library as one the Best Books for Teens in 2016 and a Top Pick for VOYA.
