It was a rainy March evening in the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff. 41 year old Lily Volpert was sitting down to her evening meal when there was a knock at the shop door. It had been a long day serving customers but she didn’t like letting people down and besides, 1952 had been a tough year so far and every penny counted. She headed back into the front of her shop to see what was wanted. Twenty minutes later the well-loved and respected shopkeeper was found dead; her throat had been cut. So began a tragedy that has left an indelible stain on Welsh history. Lily Volpert (Unsolved Murder)

On the 6th March 1952, Lily Volpert was working in her shop on Bute Street in Cardiff. She owned the shop and frequently opened the shop at night for her customers. Around 8pm William Archbold entered the shop and found Lily in a pool of blood at the door. She had significant injuries to her neck and she was later pronounced dead. The police began an investigation which would lead to the trial of a man named Mahmoud Mattan.
