Many of you Doug is our vice president of development and has been instrumental in developing our Oil 101 content, but you may not also know that he is an industry veteran with a long history in the supply trading side of the business. Doug welcome. Thanks for having me over on The Drill Down, it’s nice to be here. Tell the folks a little bit of your background and you got involved with us and what you’re up to now. My oil and gas background is a little less on the nuts and bolts side. I ended up getting my degree in finance from the University of Texas and moved to New York and ended up working on the finance, the brokerage and treating side of the business, specifically derivatives, futures options and things like that. All that mysterious stuff that we can never understand. All the things that you and your colleagues like to call the fake oil business I believe. Fake oil, is that … I remember you had a couple overseas assignments too Doug as part of that time with Man Financial. That’s correct. I was really fortunate, I started off working on the night desk in really the infancy or electronic treating. Back when the floor volume still dominated the Nymex, and the electronic treating just traded overnight so I was sitting up at the desk overnight. But it was really interesting for me because we were executing trades and interacting with Singapore as it came online and then London in the morning also. Even being in New York you’re really focusing on the international group and then I did have the chance myself to start up some operations in London that covered European fuel oil markets. Terrific, terrific. Doug also helped develop our supply trading module that covers crude and products training that you’ll hear more about later. Doug how are you continuing to stay current on the market and leverage your supply trading experience? After really focusing on your side of the industry, the nuts and bolts and the training and our core content, I had started to lose touch with the day to day price fluctuations. I’m just a news hound, I really craved getting back into that daily knowledge of what happens, what’s really driving crude oil prices. Again being a news hound I started researching it and I thought a good way to force myself and get some discipline in that would be to create a newsletter, a blog post, a daily summary of what happened in the markets and some of the news stories that I think are really most important in driving and influencing things for that day. Right. Tell the story for the group when Doug first got in the industry, I had some training materials that I dumped on him and at one point he finally said, “This is very interesting stuff but you can’t give me anything that’s going to help me in the next 15 minutes would you mind holding off and giving it to me on the weekend?” Yeah, it’s a different … The time frame when you’re on the trading side is a little bit different, you’re really worried about what’s happening every second, as opposed to just at the end of the year. You follow crude prices and crude’s bounced off its low, almost $40 a barrel, some people say almost doubled. Any ideas of your own on what’s been causing the bump up that our folks might be beneficial to hear from you as a trader? There’s a couple of things. First of all this talk of the output freeze from OPEC, which if you’ve been reading my newsletter you know I’m really skeptical about this thing. It’s just talk, I don’t think it really changes anything from a supply side, but the headlines have been enough in a nervous market to cause some short covering. On the real fundamental side is this dramatic drop in rig count. One of the things that we talk about every week because it comes out every Friday, the Baker Hughes rig count comes out and there’s no doubts about the effects that that will have on production. Now while it’s happened slower than most people really anticipated, they almost thought that it would be a 1 for 1, you take a rig out the oil production would decline, it didn’t really work out that way. It is having an effect. If I would add a third thing it would be the question of the survival of a lot of these E&amp;P operators on the financing side. They were able to exist on old money and old receivables and things like that in the last year, but this year they’re really struggling. I just noticed an article over the last couple days on Doug’s point on the production freeze, that Russia and some of the OPEC members are about to meet in Qatar to talk over what to do. Many of you may not know that Russia is not part of OPEC, yet is the second largest producer in the world after Saudi Arabia and right now the US is the third largest producer in the world after Saudi Arabia and Russia. Interesting to me that we never get invited to the meetings as a nation because our production is made up of thousands of independent operators. It would be interesting to see what the other 2 big producers come up with in this meeting in Qatar. Not sure that’s having an impact on the crude price type of information that Doug passes out to you. That’s more of a strategic long term view of what might be going on. How do folks sign up for your crude price material Doug? Sure, the reason I don’t have this as part of the ektinteractive.com website and publication was, first of all I didn’t know if I would really keep it up. It’s a lot of work. Doing something day in day out like that, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t starting something that I couldn’t keep up.  You’re making a promise to your readers that you’re going to provide this information every day. Now I’m almost a year into doing this, so I set up a website, oilpricesdaily.com and I set up its own email list for that reason, to see if I would actually do it. The second reason is that not everyone of our subscribers wants that type of information. I don’t want to be sending out emails and bothering our core audience if that’s not something they want. It’s a separate website and it’s a separate email list. If people are interested in that type of thing they can go over to oilpricesdaily.com and subscribe there. Thanks Doug.
