Interview Highlights For 10 years of her life, Barbara worked tirelessly for her job until one day she was unexpectedly laid off. This sudden changed devastated Barbara, taking her 5 years to recover from the disappointment of being let go after working so hard. With newly found strength Barbara now sees the blessing that is a result of this change, because she created I Am This Women. If Barbara did not get laid off years ago, then I Am This Woman would not exist. Barbara’s childhood was a bit different from most, as she was raised primarily by her father. She shares how this experience shaped her life and outlook. Barbara lived 16 years of her youth without seeing her mother, which had both positive and negative effects on her. Unfortunately, she was left wondering if something was wrong with her or did she do anything to cause her mother to leave. Alternatively, Barbara used this experience to inspire her to be the best mother she could be for her son because she never wanted him to feel the pain she endured. Barbara emphasized the importance of surrounding ourselves with people that will build us up and support us the way we need to be supported. It is important to evaluate who we have in our lives to determine if they should stay or if it is time for them to go, and be mindful of who we invite into our lives as well.  Consider the people you surround yourself with as your circle. Everyone will not fit into your circle and some people who are present do not belong there. Barbara has pledged to live a committed life, being influenced by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Her favorite quote is “Be the change you wish to see in the world” by Mahatma Gandhi and she shares the origin of this saying which has been changed over the years. Barbara has such a positive outlook on life and she encourages everyone to find things to be grateful for because life is a gift that we should embrace.
